Field of Glory: Medieval Custom battles

Post by neil501 »

I don't understand i set up a custom battle but yet i can ONLY get one superior cavalry but the game wont allow me to buy anymore why? I thought it was a custom game meaning i can make the game the way i want to play it? The other problem is i routed enemy cavalry and my best unit just followed the enemy off the map chasing them which i did NOT approve! It happened on it's own! I've had about 4-5 of my best units leave the game like that it has ruined my game all i have left is terrible units and the enemy has ALL his best units still on the map how can i stop them from chasing units off the map. Logically i would think they would stop turn around and help their leaders kill the remaining forces in the field. Do i have to download a mod maybe? Please let me know thank you!

Custom Battle mode allows you to choose many parameters, but not make any army composition you like. That would soon get boring.

Instead each nation has its own army list from which you choose from the available troops. The number of each type permitted are generous, but within the bounds of historical possibility.

You can't stop them unless they decide to stop of their own volition. Once again, this is historical behaviour. If they do pursue off the map, they have a 5% chance of returning each turn. (But see below for how you could reduce the chance of them pursuing off the map, without resorting to modding the game).

As far as I know there is no readily available mod that does this. However, it would be very easy to write one.

However, before you rush into modding out this behaviour, consider that it is part of the simulation, applies equally to the AI, and might actually enhance your enjoyment of the game once you get used to it. If you attack inward from the flanks, the enemy are not so likely to flee off the map, and so your troops are not so likely to pursue them off it.

It is all part of the skill of a game where the player does not have perfect control of all of his troops all of the time, just as no historical general ever did.

Also to add to Richards insights, I have found(FOG2-not tried yet on Medieval) that if you combine light horse and heavy horse in your attack and you break the attacked unit, both of your cavalry will pursue but the light horse will pursue further, while the heavy cavalry will pull up short and not pursue as far...allowing you to wheel it around to return to the fray.
