Game 1. Ronnie (Axis) vs Randy (Allies). December 9, 1943. One Bloody Affair. The bulk of the fighting in Russia since the winter of 1941 has been in the north. Army Group North has taken the brunt of the Russian blows. They've held remarkable well but the cohesion of their defenses in the far north is starting to crack slightly. However; there isn't much to defend there except frozen tundra so a pull back is authorized to stabilize their lines.

In the Med, Allied air and naval just won't leave the Germans & Italians in peace so Luftwaffe Stuka dive bombers hit the Allied BB fleets up to no good off the coast of Rome.

The causalities show just how bloody this war has been. German and Italian losses both in treasure and blood have been high; however, so have the Allies. The name of the game now is not total victory; but is to hold on and force an end of this war on terms favorable to the Axis.

(4) Borger (Axis) vs Ronnie (Allies). January 28, 1942. The First Russia Winter is Germany's Best Friend! Yes, you read that right! No, I didn't make a mistake! Borger is a master in efficiency and execution. Russian winter this turn and Borger had reached and stopped at his usual '41 winter line in Russia. He reached this line with remarkably few losses, as the casualties below show. His troops in Russia are rested and by the end of winter he'll have a double line there and will most likely get a tech upgrade for both his infantry and armor. Note that stopped one hex from my front line. This does two things for him. One, it allows him to upgrade these units and two if I want to make contract with him I have to move out of my entrenched positions to do so.

On thing that playing Borger has taught me is patience. In 1941 he wasn't greedy. He took what was given and didn't expose himself and as a result he's in a very good defensive position for the winter. Also, he'll use the winter to build up his offensive capability in order to unleash it on me come Spring 1942. There will be several turns that I'll lose 4 to 5 infantry corps. Russian PPs in most of 1942 will be used to replace their losses.

Borger is the grinder. He doesn't make mistakes. Beating him requires a near perfect game free from critical errors.

(6) Ronnie (Axis) vs Gabriele (Allies). France fell April 28, 1940. The picture below shows the situation in France at the start of the German turn and before Paris was captured. My losses were higher and my units were depleted much more that I would have like. However; a number of these losses was due to very aggressive participation by the UK. The UK lost approximately 14 air steps and 13 naval steps.

(6) Ronnie (Axis) vs Gabriele (Allies). The Invasion (9/15/40) & Conquest (10/5/40) of Greece. This is the first game as the Axis that I've tried invading Greece in 1940 and before Hungary & Romania enters the war and Yugoslavia is conquered. All my other Axis opponents have employed an early invasion strategy against me so I'd thought I'd give it a try. This strategy is riskier than the other approach; especially to the Italian navy, but I'd thought I'd give it a go. If pulled off this means the Axis player can complete the conquest of the Balkans in 1940 and gives them the early part of 1941 for other activities.

The pictures below captures my two turn conquest of Greece. The first picture shows the situation right after the invasion. Note that I have landed an Italian corps on Crete and have based air on Rhodes and the two Greek islands to respond to any UK response against Crete or the Italian navy. That was a good this too because the second picture shows that Gabriele sortied the UK Mediterranean fleet. A UK BB and CV attacked the Italian tactical bomber and took off 3-steps combined. The second UK BB ran into the Italian sub on its way to mischief. Greece fell on the second turn. Also, the Germany and Italian fighters based on the Greek islands attacked the UK CV fleet along with the Italian sub. This combined attacked knocked off 5-steps. The Italians withdrew their tactical bomber. Fortunately Greece fell and the Italian navy won't need to stay in harms way after next turn. The Italian BB fleet southeast of Athens is exposed to counterattack but those are the risks of war.

Also note that I positioned the Italian garrison in Albina on the border with Greece to protect the German air bases against attack from the Greek infantry corps in the north if the conquest takes longer than two turns. This means that the Italian garrison can be attacked on the first turn by that Greek corps if the Allied player so chooses to. But the cost of repairing one to four steps of loss to the garrison (1-4 PPs) is better than playing for repairing one to four steps loss to a tactical bomber (6-26 PPs).

One other thing to point out is that I have a German leader in Italy two hexes southeast of Taranto at the very tip of "Italian heel of the boot". The leader is just out of range to providing a boost to the two most southern invading German infantry corps but provides an all important leadership boost to German tactical bombers and the one corps that landed next to the Greek mine.

By the way, if I can bag the UK CV then according to the BJR house rules Egypt becomes neutral and the Malta supply rule no longer applies until such time that the UK can bring another CV into the Med to restore the minimum naval presence of 2 BBs and 1 CV required. Thus, the CV in the Med in 1940 & 1941 is a very attractive target to the Axis. Losing it means the UK must strip away the one remaining CV in England and move it to the Med. This makes a early spring 1941 Sea Lion more attractive or convoy attacks throughout 1941 easier.

(2) Jim (Axis) versus Ronnie (Allies). August 11, 1943.
My email to Jim (8/11/43) wrote:The US/UK continued their strategic bombing of Germany.

The US/UK continued their push in southern Italy. They captured Taranto and make a push for Naples. They got close to capturing Naples but couldn't quite finish off the garrison there. Also, the Brits have four invasion transports lined up to attempt an "Anizo" type operation; expect this one might be called "Florence". I'm not sure how this one will play out but I wanted to put pressure on the Axis to respond.

Speaking of putting pressure on the Axis, the Russians continued their slow advance and in the process destroyed one German infantry corps and one Axis minor infantry corps. It's all too apparent that the Russian airforce is inferior to the Luftwaffe; however, they're necessary to soften up targets so ground attacks can finish them off and they force the Germans to burn oil.

As the Axis player isn't it a comfort to know that now with the new "Country.class" file that now you'll always have a small amount of oil each turn. It is to me. Also, knowing that the Allied tactic of taking the Axis oil level negative and keeping it negative for the rest of the game is a thing of the past. And that you'll have some capability to move and attack with your oil consuming units through the end of the game. I think this changes the end game for the Axis significantly and makes the game more balanced.
This is the part of the game where the transition from mid game to end game begins. Also, this is the most enjoyable part of the game for the Allies. In the start game they must take blow after blow throw by the Axis player. Their objective is simply to survive. In the mid game, where the initiative starts shifting slowly to them away from the Axis they're able to do more than just counter punch (e.g., Torch, winter Russian offensive) but still are vulnerable. It's the end game when where the initiative has fully swung to them and the Axis are on the defensive where they can go for the throat and try to take Rome and Berlin out before May 1945. This the Allied player's time to have fun. Now the question is can I take Rome and Berlin before May 1945. I'll do my best but no matter what this is the fun part for the Allies. I play to enjoy it!

(2) Jim (Axis) versus Ronnie (Allies). August 31, 1943. Jim put the "wood" to my flanking Anizo invasion type maneuver. Here is our email exchanges for his turn and my turn that followed.
Jim, Axis 8/31/43 wrote:The attempted amphibious flanking move in the Med drew a sharp response from the Axis forces. One transport group was destroyed, and the other three have been denied their landing beaches. More Germans than you can shake a schnitzel at have arrived in the area. Resting the Luftwaffe for a couple of turns seems to have helped immensely, the fighter combat was on fairly even terms.
Jim, Allies 8/31/43 wrote:I expected a strong response to my flanking invasion in Italy but not that strong. The invasion was called off. The US/UK destroyed the two Italian corps in front of the Gustov line and captured Naples.
Jim, Axis 9/20/43 wrote:The situation with the Anzio type invasion shows how well balanced this game is now. Historically, Anzio was a terribly ill-conceived and executed operation, and while it can work in the vanilla game, it doesn't work too well in our mod. I do think it is worth posing the threat, however, because it certainly forces the Axis player to move units that he would probably rather not move (at least not in that direction!).

(1) Ronnie (Axis) vs Randy (Allies). May 17, 1944. The Bloody Affair Continues.
My email to Randy for the turn wrote:I'll let me secrets out of the bag. Germany's out of oil and their manpower is below 0. This is the perfect game to evaluate the impact of the new "Country.class" file. Because without it I wouldn't stand a chance. At least now I have a fighting one.

The Allies are like ants. I step on 10 and 20 more show up! Army Group North is shattered! My only saving grace is the bit of oil I get at the start of each turn and the relatively large number of PPs that I get to build infantry with. Lots of infantry. Lots of -2 quality, -2 survivable infantry.

(1) Ronnie (Axis) vs Randy (Allies). April 2, 1945. The End is Near!. I'm not going to be able to hold out. Oh ... so close! German manpower always goes into the red but -711 (-82%) is a record for me. This has been an enjoyable game.

(1) Ronnie (Axis) vs Randy (Allies). April 2, 1945. Berlin was captured and Germany surrendered during the Allied Turn. A minor Allied Victory (or a minor Axis Loss). Well played Randy!

By the way, the new Country.class file worked like a charm. It allowed me some oil each turn. Without this I probably would have collapsed and Berlin and Rome would have fell in 1944.

Your game seems like a very well balanced game and the new country.class game seemed to do the trick. That is very encouraging. I hope we will see similar results in the other games.

The BJR-mod victory conditions make it fun to play to the very end. With the vanilla victory conditions you would have known you had lost once you lost Paris to the Allies, but in the BJR-mod you always have something to play for until Germany surrenders. Remember that the Allies need to take Hamburg as well to force a surrender. If you only take Berlin then the Germans can try to take it back until Hamburg falls.

We'll I certainly overlooked that one.
I put no effort in defending Hamburg. I wish I could have that one back. :(
