some issues/questions about LOS

Post by JensAtSaxony »

LOS = Line of sight and line of sound :-D

1. I have the situation where one of my heavy cav unit is behind a hill on ground with high 0. the hill is wide, so no enemy could see me. next field is 50 and the next is 100. when I move my cav to high 50, I expect not to be seen by other player, because the high 100 field is in front. But my LOS changes on this field, so that I can see the complete area in front of the hill. That is unexpected. Also I'm afraid the other player also can see my unit too.

2. Sometimes I see in the replay moves from other players, which were taken back. I saw for instance a unit of light bow men coming out of the woods and teleports back. That is not a good behavior in the replay, because as a result you can see possible traps.

3. Similary to point 2, I think it is not so good, when in the replay moves of hidden armies are hearable in sound parts. So you could calculate the amount of units behind a hill or in the woods. Maybe this behavior is also wished from your side. But in reality I don't think that you can hear units behind a hill so clearly, when you r on a battlefield. Of course this could be acceptable behavior to hear the units particularly, especially when you hear the units in the woods. :-)

Btw. I really like the game.

EDIT: @support btw2 I have a game "The Standard (Anglo-Norman vs Scots) which I can't send to the server. Maybe you want to have a look for debugging to find the reason.

Yes. The LOS algorithm is in the game engine, and isn't perfect. Reverse slopes of hills often don't hide troops - you need to stay on the flat behind the hill.

You have a point. Once again the engine operates the replay, and it simply replays all moves done by the player. The engine has no way of knowing which orders should be shown and which not. No doubt that could be implemented, but it would be a more major task than we deem it worth.

Perhaps true. But in reality there was also the issue of dust, that might be visible, at least in dry weather. Generally speaking, historically, it was wise for ambushes to remain stationary until sprung.

Thanks, but support won't look at the general forum. Please report things like this in the technical support forum.

Sometimes when you get the above message it means the server is temporarily down, sometimes it is a momentary glitch and the turn has in fact saved, and then the server won't let you save it again. Have a look in the Enemy Turn tab to see if it has in fact saved.

Thanks for your replies.

I have no glue, of your team structure and which part of the software is 3rd party, but point 2. could be fixed with less effort, when the right guy gets a ticket. My suggestion is to add a flag for "retaken". The commands are in a queue and in the replay processed one by one. There is the possibiliy to take back commands with the green arrow. So if this is done, the flag should be true. In the replay all commands with flag "retaken=true" will be not processed. :-)

Point 1. is a bit more effort, but also possible to do, when there is a ticket. The logic of LOS still exists and there could be changes. 0 to 0+n works good, but >0 to 1+n seems to have an issue. But when I understand correctly, the engine and its developers are not available for your bug and feature requests?

Point 3. would take the most effort, I guess. And it is okay now, so I can live with the current situation.

Btw. I am confused, that you answer me, that the support is not watching this thread. But there also a "rbodleyscott" answered me. Are you different persons with the same name in the forum? There are 5 moderators named "rbodleyscott", with the same profile. That confuses me a bit.

Edit: if so, could you please move this thread to the "Tech Support" Channel?

I am rbodleyscott, there is only one of me. I am a moderator for multiple subforums. I am the game designer. I am not technical support.

Most of your original post was not about technical support. I have seen your suggestions, and your possible bug report, and have taken note.

If the game is still in your My Games tab, then try playing the turn again and see if it uploads properly this time. If it is in the Enemy Turn tab, it means it did upload successfully despite the on screen message saying it didn't. This sometimes happens.

All I am suggesting is that in future you don't combine technical support issues with non-support issues in the same thread in the non-technical-support subforum. This is for your benefit, not mine. If you want the support issues to be seen by technical support, they will only be reading the support forum, not this one. I tend to read both, but cannot deal with all support issues.

Also when the issue is known, I want to add a screenshot, so that new players know, what this thread is about.

Cav unit can see the top of the hill 100 meter above their heads, some 100 meters in the length of the hill and are able to look 50 meters down again on the other side of the hill. On the left side, this unit can also look further 100meters high and as a clear view to this hills top position.

The main problem for me is, that any kind of traps with hills in its plan, are not save to process (in addition of replay functionality) and should be avoided.
