Its my first post in this forum. I have made a couple of scenarios inspired in the from Warhammer novel Riders of the Dead, by Dan Abnett. I love this novel, but it stands apart from other Warhammer fiction. Its more of less realistic and doesn´t have a lot of magic and no monsters, so I thought it could be easily translated to FOG Medieval. Now, I dont have modding experience whatsoever and even in the editor I didn´t have a clue of what I was doing half the time. Aditionally, I´m not an English native speaker. If you spot some mistakes, please let me now.
Both scenarios depict battles between the Kurgan, daemon-worshiping nomad marauders, and an alliance between Kislev and the Empire. At the present time, you can only play with the Kurgan, and they are open battles. I tried to make the first one a battle to control the flags, but I failed
Scenarios background (spoilers ahead from the novel Riders of the Dead)
Zhevedka: Zhevedka is a town in the northern country of Kislev, besieged by the hordes of Chaos-worshiping nomads of the Kurgan. In the year 2521, it hosted an army of Empire and Kislev allies, but it was attacked by night. In the novel, the defenders were caught unaware and totally defeated, but I gave them a fighting chance. I assumed that the attack were spotted early on, and fresh troops were arriving in a column and can join the battle.
Mazhorod is a river crossing in Kialwc. In the year of 2522 a kislevite boyar defended the crossing with an army of his countrymen and some units of allies from the southern Sigmarite Empire, mostly stragglers from previous defeats. When the first wave of kurgan tried to cross the waters they were received by a storm of arrows that disorganized them, but Chaos magic turned a portion of the river to ice so kurgan troops can cross. I made the river impassable except for the middle portion, that is treated as an stream.
Factions:
Red (Kurgan)
There are the Kurgan, nomad tribes from the eastern and northern steppes. They worship daemons of Chaos and raid the . Their war chiefs are named Zar. I selected three for each battle, from the leaders mentioned in the novel.
Kurgan are nomads and they live in the saddle, so the horse warbands are the most prestigious. In the novel they use bows, but many warriors dont use one, and they prefer to charge and fight in close combat. Kurgan cavalry are above average, 50% bow, light spear and swordmen. There are some picked warbands from the most important Zar that are superior and have better armour, but no lances. In the novel, Kurgan dont use lances and fear Kislev cavalry with that weapon.
Infantry fights with spear, handweapons and shields, but dont seem to make shieldwalls, except to repel cavalry. So I made them light spear and swordsmen. In the novel they struggle to attack pikeman from the front, as seen in the battle of Zhevedka, but they have some success when disorganizing pike blocks with war dogs. I included some units of picked infantry, which are impact foot, and a unit of berserkers. They dont get mentioned in the novel, but I assumed that there are some groups of crazed mutants in a Chaos army!
Blue (Kislev and the empire)
Kislev is a rip-off of Slavic countries in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Empire is the same, with the Holy Roman Empire.Northern Kislev cavalry is mostly organised by pulks, companies of semi-permanent militiamen from the frontier communities. Each pulk fights as horse archers or as winged lancers, with medium armor, lance and javelins. Horse archers have bow and swordsmen. Lancers are average and have some armor; they should win the impact on kurgan cavalry head on and be quite good against kurgan infantry. Some warbands have better quality and armour; this reppresentes better than average pulks and regular regiments from Kislev permanent army. In the novel we see some lancers using javelins at the charge or when skirmishing, but I dont think the main bodies of cavalry should have javelins. I made some lancer skirmishers with light spear and javelins, though, to represent small detachments sent to cover flanks and fight with skirmishers. In Zhevedka, Kislev troops run from the battle but from a few skirmishes, and the fight was mainly Kurgan against the Empire, so I only included light units.
Kislev foot is mostly describe in the novel as partisan and militiamen. I made them of average quality, but unarmored and with heavy weapons (they are irish foot as included in the main game). I included light archers. In the tabletop game, Kislev has units of infantry with both heavy weapons and bows, which I dont particularly like. I think that infantry with light bowmen catches the feel of a weapon system of combined arms better that a mixed unit.
Empire troops in the novel are mostly pikemen with some two-handed soldiers from support and a variety of shooting weapons. Lanksnecht, to put it simple. In the tabletop the Empire doenst have pikes, but I prefer Abnett´s take. FOG doenst have pikemen, but I feel that large units of offensive pikemen represent Empires soldiery quite well, although perhaps they should be drilled. Units present at Mazhorod are mostly stragglers and survivors from other battles, so they shouldnt be very good anyway, and in Zhevedka they were raised. I also included a couple of units of longbowmen, as described in the novel.
In Zhevedka there are some companies of demilancers in the arriving column. These are described in the novel with half-armour, lance and gunpowder weapons like pistols, but they seem to use them in the charge, so they are classified as lancers without shooting capabilities. There are also pikemen, and crossbowmen to depict both these troops and arquebusiers.
In the novel, the picket line of the Empire camp is defended by trenches and artillery, so included two kinds of artillery to depict canons and short barrelled pieces andsome light crossbowmen to depict crossbowmen and arquebusiers on guard duty. They defend a ditch. In the camp I included some pikemen, medium spearmen to depict half-formed or milita companies, and a unit of horsemen; the cavalry fought as an array of different companies. The commander of the army is not present, as he was a drunkard and died early, but I placed a unit of heavy weapon foot to depict his guard (in the novel they fought with short swords, but I imagined that they use zweihanders).
