Round 2
Aetius39 (Thracian) defeats carpenkm (Macedonian) 48-21
Very difficult battle; both sides were in good defensive positions that neither wanted to assault. The Thracians sent out their lights to hopefully beat his lights and harass the main units enough so that they came down, but the reverse happened. The result was a mess of different mini-battles playing out. At a few times it seemed the Macedonians would prevail, but a combination of luck (several Macedonian units broke fairly early) and having more overall units to pin down/flank more often led the Thracians to a hard-fought victory. GG carpenkm it was tough!^^
Aetius39 - 60 + 27 = 87 points
carpenkm - 21 points

Well played Aetius. It was tough and I've learnt a lot about the game in the last few weeks. There may be only one, but I'll be back!!!Aetius39 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 7:02 am Round 2

Round 2
Karvon - Thracians defeated Deeter - Macedonians 61-41 So a score of 80 - 41.
The field was very favorable to the Thracians; a large steep rough covered ridge ran almost diagonally from the center off to the left edge with a small pass at the far end. In the center, beyond the ridge lay a fair patch of rough, then a gentle hill with some rough and yet another steep hill lay beyond. On our right, a large steep rough covered hill lay on our rear edge on the same angle as the ridge with a roughly six element wide pass between them. That hill overlooked a large forest which completed masked off our right up to almost the center of the field. Beyond a bit of open ground, more forest and another steep hill filled the far right corner of the field. In short, we had a lot of difficult terrain to hide in and around on both flanks. The Macedonians could really only safely operate in about a third of the field from the center to our right, being where most of the open ground lay.
Given the constricted nature of the field, we opted to go foot heavy and didn't bring too much horse. We had five LH we deployed to screen the center open ground. We had a pair of cavalry we hid in the woods on our far right. We also deployed half a dozen MF and a pair of picked WBs in those woods hidden back a ways to spring later in the battle. I think I had a couple of LF with them as well. Our main axis of advance would be on our left over the hills and rough. We deployed screen of LF to lead the way and followed it up with a dozen or so MF and a few picked WBs. A pair of horse were deployed to help turn the flank on this end.
The Macedonians fielded a fairly traditional combined arms force in the more open ground of his center/left. Pikes and spears in the center with a few supporting MF on each flank. A screen of LF. A force of cavalry, a mix of lancers and spear formed up on their left.
My plan was to move aggressively across the hills on my left and turn the Macedonian right. My right wing was to be sprung later, once his main body was fixed on my left.
Our skirmish line seized the high ground on our left and engaged some Macedonian LF. Our massed MF moved up behind them and slowly began pivoting towards the center as the opposing skirmishers were driven back.
The Macedonians probed with their horse towards the woods and drove my LH away from the center. They brought up a pair of MF to mask off the woods when I revealed a pair of mine. They pushed forward in the center, turning to face my troops on the high ground as we pressed forward. Some of their horse swept around behind the ridge in an attempt to threaten my rear. I shifted some of my lights back and secured the slopes from any serious intrusions. His horse shifted back to the center to support his heavy infantry facing down my mediums in the rough and on the slopes.
On the left my skirmisher disrupted some of MF defending the rough beyond the hills and I attacked these with my own MF while continuing to wheel to encircle. In chasing off LF or pursuing broken MF, a couple of MF and WBs moved into open ground and were soon engaged by his pikes or spears. This was where the battle would be decided.
I sprung my right wing out of the woods in stages to threaten his masking MF and hopefully draw his horse away from the developing battle on my left. First I moved out just a couple of additional MF, and then fed more out as his horse turned to counter and help protect his MF. Finally and sent out my own cavalry. I made a few sacrificial attacks trying to pin and flank his troops and mostly lost those, costing me about half that force. This did keep most of his cavalry busy while my left ground down and encircled his right.
The left is where we won it. While some of my MF kept about an equal number of spears tied down along the ridge, my WB and other MF supported by some horse encircled and flanked his pikes through the rough. These eventually broke, and the Macedonians streamed off the field.

Re: There Can Be Only One! - New Tournament - Round 2
Round 2
tyronec (Macedonians 355/Greek allies) vs. Stew101 (Thracians 350)
Draw, Thracians lead by 59-50.
Close game from start to finish. The Thracians turned up with an army that was 60% light troops however the Macedonians had the early advantage and were up 20% after catching several skirmishing units. When the battle lines joined on the left flank the Macedonians were able to clear an area of rough that was occupied by Mediums using a combination of Hoplites, Mediums, Lights and Cavalry. However in the center the Thracian warbands cut through pike phalanxes like a knife through butter, and once the first unit or two crumbled then some flanks opened up. At the end of the game the Macedonians were barely hanging on, one more turn and likely it would have been a defeat.
Someone should have told Alexander that invading Thrace was maybe not such a good idea !

Re: There Can Be Only One! - New Tournament - Round 2
SawyerK with the Thracians, fighting bitterly to the end, succumbed to the Macedonians of R2SExcelsior by 61-52. The battle was hard fought throughout and a last minute rally by a fragmented pike that allowed it to hit a warband on the flank gave the Macedonians the margin of victory.

rs2excelsior (Macedonian) beat SawyerK (Thracian) 61-52
(Score from this match is 69-52, I think?)
It was a close battle from start to finish. I took probably more pikes than I should have and occupied a ridge of mostly open ground, opposite the rough hill where the Thracians had set up. My skirmishers managed to establish superiority, so I didn't really have to assault their position. The Thracians pushed around my right, making a big L shaped battle. A few pikes did give way, but out in the open the Macedonians had the edge - a slight initial advantage to my side flipped around as the Thracians started to give way. A pike phalanx rallied from fragmented to disrupted just in time to hit a warband in the flank, and my xystophoroi managed to get a flank charge off. I still thought the battle would end up being a draw on time, but on or near the very last turn enough of the Thracians gave way to give the Macedonians a narrow victory.
The battlefield at the end: Good game SawyerK, it was a fun fight!

Round 2
snooky51 (Macedonians) defeat challenge1 (thracians) --- 40-15
Thracians defended a high hilltop but were unable to use their superior numbers as the Macedonians slowly worked an envelopment. Rest of the map was a flat plain, not much challenge1 could do.

Re: There Can Be Only One! - New Tournament - Round 3 Starting Soon!
I guess Challenge1 and me are out. After the defeat in Thrace my general is happy to accept a guard duty in Macedon why the rest can go and get killed in Persia.
Who would like to go there, anyway? Chilling in Macedon is far better prospect
Aetius39, thanks for organising the tournament!
EDIT: What?! A slave?! No paid vacation?!

After the Thracian tribes were put in order, Alexander and his army crossed over into Asia and invaded Persia. Yes things don't end well for anyone but the last winner. There can be only one, remember?^^
Also, thanks for joining and playing Olin! As I said before, I will be doing another one after the DL ends, as long as there is interest. Hope to see you then.^^
