Welsh Spearmen why are they so good?

Welsh spearmen seem to own other heavy infantry despite being medium, heavy defensive spearmen seem to get rolled by them, is it because of the extra line in their ranks?

I didn't think they were so good and complained that 50 was too much to pay for them. Against heavy infantry they were just losing or not doing much for me. But, I think they really become useful later in the battle because of their large size.
