Are Tool Tips Enough to Play
I know FOG2 very well. Do I need to read the FOG2 Medieval manual or will tooltips and the tutorial be enough?

Tooltips and the tutorials are all you really need especially if you are comfortable with the Ancients game. The manual (which is beautifully laid out I might add) has some additional details about certain units and mechanics that are new in the medieval game. Including a table of the POAs if you want that as an additional reference.
A couple other thoughts on the game that might be useful to you:
One thing to note is that many more units in this game have the unmaneuverable trait so if you are used to getting that extra free 45 degree turn when in command range of a leader in the Ancients game this might take you by surprise.
I also tend to think the epic battle scenarios in the Medieval game tend towards being somewhat more challenging than in the Ancients game.
Knights are great here but if caught out of position don't assume they can perform miracles.
The extra movement lighter cavalry has over Knights can be quite useful.
While a lot of the infantry is offensive or defensive spearmen and pay attention to some of the differences between say the Welsh ones, Low Country ones, and the Scottish ones.
The battles here feel most like in WATG but with more armored units and new unit types particularly knightly lancers.
Read the manual section on the Standard Wagon if using a list like the Imperial Germans that has it (they are not the same as a defenseless baggage wagon).
The Mongols while different then some of their feudal foes may just be one of the most powerhouse armies in the game. They are awfully scary with oodles of really nice horse archer cavalry that can really do a job on other armies if you play them right.

So the Germans, at least, get War Wagons. That is interesting.
I'll print off the POA tables for easy reference.
I have a couple of MP friends raring to go.

I started reading the manual. I had forgotten how interesting the historical essays, and the play notes are. Read the manual, even if just for this.
