Shooting rear ranks of a coloum in combat

unit A BG enemy spear facing down
unit B Friendly BG Hv/armoured Heavy weapon facing up in combat with BG A
unit C Friendly BG Hy/armoured Heavy weapon facing up in coloum in combat with BG A
unit D Enemy slingers facing up

Can BG D fire at the rear base of BG C, we played it today as they could I tried looking in the main rules but could'nt find that they could'nt.

Have'nt put it in but there was a friendly BG next to C stopping them expanding

yes you can at a - for bg being in close combat. Jsut can't shoot at the first 2 ranks or any overlaps - effectively those providing dice in melee combat.

You can't fire at first or second rank bases where the first rank is in contact with enemy or fighting as an overlap but you can fire at third or subsequent ranks.
