Bold comparison: PzC vs Chess

Post by kop101 »

Without a doubt, these games are very different, but do you think Panzer Corps is on par with chess in terms of tactical/strategical depth?

On one hand, there are such things as forks, discovered attacks, pins, and other stuff in chess. On the other hand, we have such concepts as surrenders, ambushes, mass attack, suppression, etc in Panzer Corps. Not to mention lots of unit classes, terrain types, experience...

Well Richard Martin is a chess champion who loves PC for its comparison to Chess, and PC MP Champion Lifever coined the phrase for PC as being chess with dice

love that idea

I think SP blind, i.e. on new maps is on par in terms of tactical/strategical depth... as well as MP for sure...

I even believe PzC is much more complex for the AI than chess, i.e. on big maps such as Battlefield Europe... players (and the AI) have literally an abundance of choices (every turn and over 99 turns)...

If the PzC AI was as smart as modern chess AIs are, I doubt you could win resource-balanced matches.

I'd say that there is much more depth in PC because the units have many more abilities and the maps are much bigger. It is a simple matter of the number of unit types, their abilities, and the map size. The number of available permutations are much larger. Overall, this is a silly comparison. Actually, worse than apples & oranges. I don't care either way and am not picking either as better as I haven't played chess in 40 years or PC in over a year, but chess is an 8x8 board with 6 different piece types with much reduced movement limitations and no ranged abilities (e.g., a piece can't sit back and attack another in chess). If you put PC pieces on an 8x8 board and pick 6 of them and then limit them to the same movement restrictions, you have the same game as chess. As is, PC has many more pieces with many more variant movement/attack abilities (not just straight ahead/diagonal) and much larger(not 8x8) maps so the possible movement/attack possibilities are infinitely greater. Actually, it is a form of chess but on a much larger scale in terms of the number of pieces, their movement ability, and the size of the battlefield.

My grandfather always said: "You don't compare oranges and turnips!"
For example, make a comparison between Western Chess and Shogi (Japanese Chess).

While I love PC, there is no comparison. Chess has stood the test of time. PC, not so much.

The feeling is mutual
Wouldn't mind slapping somebody around a little - strategically
If we would live forever, I would certainly play all day

Past over present because present over future?
There is always a comparison. It is a common loser attitude of our species
