Les Nerviens 2009 - Game 1
Hi all,
This is my first attempt to post an AAR so please bear with it.
With regards to my background I have been playing FOG for a year and in that time I have participated in 4 FOG 2 day doubles tournaments, 1 FOG 1 day doubles tournament and approx 6 single player games. This is in part due to my job and the fact I dont have a club nearby that plays FOG. As you can see if played a fair bit with a partner so this was my first outting as a single player in a tournament.
So with approx 2 weeks to go I decided that I wanted in on this tournament and managed to both loan an army and get a lift most of the way from one of the brits, cheers Jim!!!! I decided to take the Later Carthaginian list as I wanted some decent foot that wasnt Roman and a unit of elephants. Below is my list...

The master plan was to hold the centre with the heavy foot and have the medium foot flanking either side with light foot screening the main line. The light horse were split between both flanks with the cavalry acting as a delaying force. The elephants were to be used as a rubber bullet i.e. it looks hard but isnt really (I have also not used elephants before so fancied giving a unit a go).
So with a basic grasp on the rules and a car with 4 brits in we left for France!!!! Many hours driving and alot of laughs later I was sat ready for my first game.
This was against Carl Pincemin who was using Later Macedonian, the pictures below show the basic flow of the game.

My army set out in its pre-planned format after we got a shed load of terrain.

My Gauls dashed through the terain to protect the African Veterans Flanks while my Javelin men manage to get disrupted by Cretans (I think) who had just routed my Gallic Cavalry after it got too close to them.

On the left my light Cav are trying to keep the pike near them tied up while some Gauls decide to hold fast and defend the flank. My main line launches forward as the cowardly enemy try to flee from them. My Gauls on the right of the main line advance and are threatend in the flank by enemy cavalry. Hannibal manages to catch my fleeing cavalry and stop them from routing. While on the far right my Light Cav are making a dash to get to the enemy camp.

On the left the Light Cav decide they have isloated the pike unit enough and one heads towards the centre while the other helps some Javelinmen break some enemy pike. My Gauls in the terrain get beat by opposing Thracians and are destroyed in short order as the main lines square off. The Gauls in the centre right manage to fight off the enemy cavalry with the help of a unit of African Veterans. The elephants have disappeared as they lasted less than a turn in combat with the enemy medium foot after exploading on a death roll. The Gallic Cavalry are fleeing from the said foot after seeing the elephants go down. My far right Light Cav unit managed to sack the camp but are now being pursured by 2 enemy units of Light Cav.

On the left my lights are being annoying while in the centre the pike finally decides to fight. Even though they are superior they begin to lose to the African Spearmen who lose bases but are still able to keep on fighting. BWhen time is called 2 of the 3 pike units are fragmented while my Gauls have broken at the far end of the line and 1 of the African Veterans are disrupted.

The result is Losing draw for me as I inflicted 5 attrition points but lost 6. I was about to lose my camp or the Gallic Cavalry but was likely to carry the centre.
Due to this being my first game with the army I think I learned a few things from it.
1-My African Veteran Spearman are hard.
2-I should not advance my Gallic Cavalry as close to the enemy as I did.
3-I basically wasted my Elephants on a pointless attack.
4-Double flanking with my Light Cav is a good idea as it ties down units or the enemy lose their camp.
I will post my 3 other games a different day as I am weak and require sleep.
Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the support chaps!!!!
The only flaw with your plan is that would require planning on my part.
Martin I will PM you will my situation at the moment.
Ive added battle number 2 and ive worked out a better way to post the report, so it should have a better narrative and make mores sense.

Well Done Conrad, the only Englishman with a higher French ranking than English ranking I believe. You obviously cunningly submarined that game.
