Anti Tank units in close terrain (map designer)

Post by spotlight2001 »

Hi,

in editor I have seen Anti Tank are often in close terrain

pros:
* less damage from enemy air force

cons:
* Anti Tanks (at least mine) have very poor close defense. They are therefore very vulnerable to infantry

realism:
I have no clue so I argue with a film "a bridge too far" where anti tank units "hide" in a forest. There is no "hiding" in Panzer Corps. Hiding could be implemented with spotting-1.

Should map designers put Anti Tanks rather on open terrain if next to Air Defense
and in Close terrain if next to artillery
?

In OoB WWII, enemy Anti-Tank guns are often placed in ambuscade in forests:

Forest uses close defence and imposes an initiative cap so AT doesn't do so well. If you don't mind modding the equipment file you could boost the CD (but that woildn,t solve the initiative issues) or give them camo trait.
I find setting entrenchment at 5 can make defensive AT units annoying to dig out so they slow down attacks. You can maybe set exp one * higher than the usual to keep life. Mixed in with some mines and both deployed randomly then AT can be very annoying.
Early on, hills and fortificaastions are good defensive terrain as the 37 and 50mm AT are not affected or hardly affected by initiative cap.

In OoB WWII, small anti-tank units have two class-specific characteristics:
- Conceleable : unit can hide on certain terrain types (forest for example), specific to small units of the class
- Defensive Weapon : unit is less effective at attacking, for all units of the class

One option could be to allow light AT units a switch between normal properties and a concealed mode with camo trait - something that some mods allow already. To meet your objectives you could increased GD, AD and CD, and maybe Ini and HA 2 points higher but with passive attack only. Basically a normal versatile unit or a more powerful defensive only unit.

Adding to my previous post, I forgot that the AI doesn't use switchable units well - typically switching at random between versions. Making a separate ambush AT unit would be no more work and is lkkely to be more effective.
