Multiple Instances Caution

Post by conboy »

I am using two instances of OoB to play and edit-as-I-go.
I think if you open the play version from the Scenarios options (NOT the play option from the editor), you will be okay. But when closing out, save the Editor version first and close it, then close out of the play version. Otherwise, the stuff gets crossed up.

In mid-game, half the german artillery disappeared and so did the end-turn hourglass. The scenario was corrupted and I had to build it again.

sad but true!

It’s possible with two computers but it seems to be a problem with steam if you’re connected. That’s why I installed a slitherine version and a steam version on each computer.

One PC, two instances of OOB.
I have never had any issues with this, not even if they are the same version.
Perfect when ou want to play a bit (for instance beta) while designing new stuff.

In that case, I advise other scenario developers to disregard my warning, and go ahead and use two instances of OoB when developing. It really speeds things up!

I probably hit a wrong button or activated a strange trigger to make the German artillery disappear, and the hourglass to stop functioning.
I am app-abusive - the tales I could tell...

It seems to me that the problem is when you test a scenario and you make changes with the editor in the same scenario at the same time, something like that.

That's what happened to me.
But it's too convenient to stop!

You should make a copy of the scenario and test the copy and edit the original for example.

When play-testing a campaign i naturally makes notes as I play a scenario. At some point I stop playing, open the scenario in the editor in OOB-instance-2, perform edits and save. Then I copy the scenario back to the campaign/scenarios folder and restart the scenario in OOB-instance-1. Very effective.

Okay, I get it. You don't edit the scenario in Instance 2 while it is underway in Instance 1.
I can see how that would create problems. Actually, it does create problems...
BTW, the Nordwind 2x2 scenario beta test is quite fun!

I only edit while playing campaign scenarios since the campaign has its own version of the scenario in the Campaign/Scenarios folder.
The editor works on the scenario in the standard Scenarios folder.

Yep, Nordwind is interesting. I have no idea how it will turn out. Historically it was a stalemate.
