The Map, the scale of The Game (150x72 hexes).

Post by firepowerjohan »

There have been some discussion about the scale of the game (mostly in topic: Technologies - Unit Types, Armour & Equipment) and what units and rules fit in what scale. We have so far mentioned the map is HUGE but i will give some details to straighten things out.

Map is 150x72 Hexagons = 10800 Hexes

Distances:
Berlin - Paris = 20 hexes
Switzerland - German Coast = 12 hexes
Warsaw - Moscow = 27 Hexes
West Edge of Map - London = 65 Hexes

Hope this clear the picture :)

Very impressive map...but since you do not include stacking that means that there can't be more than 36 Divisions on an approx. 1000 Km long front...shall we build up the Soviets in "thick red lines" then ??...

Theoretically you will need like 32-40 ground units to keep a single line in USSR but very often the number in practice is around 40 and sometimes above. When one side break at a place it will create a salient and make for a less than straight front line. Simply put, you cannot never ever afford a double line in USSR. In fact, the most crowded area of the map in France is one of the few places where you can get a 1.5 line but never a complete double lines (unless Axis stops attacking and Allies build only cheap Garrison cannon fodder units).

Axis will have maybe 70 units in total, with roughly 50 of those being ground units on the eastern front. Some unit are behind line repairing, some are kept as reserves and since front lines are constantly moving you will not have all 50 adjacent to enemy. In some occasions you do not even have forces enough to form a single line so there is plenty of maneuver space for creating breakthroughs around the huge 150x72 map :)

Working from the two data points, Warsaw-Moscow, and Berlin-Paris, I come up with an estimate of 40-45km per hex, so let's just choose 42.5 km. Thus, the map must be about 6400 km west-east, and 3000km south-north. From London to west edge of map is about 2800km. That leaves about 3600km to the east. The distance from London to Moscow is about 2500km, so I guess that gives us some idea of how far east the map extends. This surely must take in the Caucasus, and I hope we can see the Urals, too.

How large is the map in pixels? Or does it depend on your monitor's resolution? And what resolutions can we use? I have a wide screen 1920x1200, and would love to play in this native resolution.

Yes, the Urals are on the map. The resolution is 1024x768 pixels.

I have to be honest and say that 1024x768 is a big disappointment, particularly when you consider those big east front battles. How many hexes are going to fit on my screen with that resolution? One of the advantages of having a large screen is that you can fit more graphical elements on the screen. But if software doesn't support large resolutions then this defeats the purpose of having large screens. The more hexes I can see, the better. I don't want to feel like I'm looking at the map through a narrow-field camera.

Consider the open-source port of Panzer General, called LGeneral. It is 2D, the graphics are designed for one size, but it works fine with any resolution. From 640x480 to 1920x1200 it looks fine: the higher the resolution the more hexes you can see. Perfect. It shouldn't matter to you if that bottom panel is designed by your artists to be 1024 pixels wide, just centre it along the bottom of the screen for resolutions other than 1024x768. We won't mind gaps of black either side of it.

In other words, feel free to set everything regarding the graphics in stone, except for the number of hexes shown on the screen and the resolution allowable. This way, you will not have to compromise to the lowest common denominator (i.e. users stuck in the dark ages with 1024x768 resolutions), and everyone will be happy, including your artists who will not need to redraw their 2D graphics for other resolutions.

Another thought came to me. Can you run it in windowed mode? I hope in this case that you support more than one bit-depth, or that the bit-depth doesn't matter.

You can run in windowed mode, yes.
Also, we have 3 zoom levels in game so if you want to see more hexes you can easily push the scroll wheel on the mouse (or +/- keys or the zoom icon on minimap) to view more/less hexes.

Thanks for the quick answers. The zooming is definitely a good thing. In windowed mode, how do you scroll the map?

Hi!

Since you guys said that we will be able to mod all diferrent aspects of the game I wanted to know if it also possible to implement a bigger map. For example to create a game on the division scale. Or for a world map.

Thanks!

If you try hard you could probably re-paint the hexes.

We're not releasing a map editor at this stage but you can just replace the background image that you fight over. If there is enough demand it's something we will look in to but we did not want to hold up release for it.

Speaking of a world map, do you guys ever plan on expanding the game to encompass the whole world, kinda like Axis & Allies, or World at War?

Of course that is one of the alternatives we consider, but would be in a sequel :)

The more I look at this game, the more I can't wait for it. I will purchase it as soon as its possible. Now, if Only I was a multi millionaire, I would give you guys all the cash you needed to get started expanding the game to encompass the whole world.

I want to thank the whole team for your hard work.

Our thoughts from the very beginning was that the wargaming communities currently misses a game of this type, scope and detail level :)

My thoughts exactly.

This is the type of WWII strategy game I have been looking for.
