Possible bug?

Post by WogelWeid »

Greetings fellow armchair generals and creators of FoG 2 especially.

I encountered a little oddity while playing third round of the ongoing tournament. I am sorry I didn't take a picture.

There were one square free space between my triarii and enemy slingers, but triarii were able to catch them while they tried to evade.
Slingers made 1 diagonal move, so they were probably unlucky with - 4AP modifier. But triarii made 1 straight and 2 diagonal moves to be able to rear attack evading slingers, but it is 16 AP in total and triarii (as heavy infantry) are able to make 14 AP if lucky with + 4 AP modifier.

Is it a bug or am I not understanding correctly the rules about evading?

I was using the general rule of thumb, that if Heavy Infantry is not adjacent to Light Infantry, then LI cannot be caught by that HI.

It isn't a bug, the first diagonal move in a pursuit is free (i.e. 4AP instead of 6AP), otherwise it is easier to get away diagonally than orthogonally.

Thank you for a quick answer.

Then it's 14 AP for Heavy Infantry if the first diagonal move in a pursuit is 4 AP instead of 6 AP. So it's plausible for them.

Bu what about the slingers? If they also had the first diagonal move in a pursuit costing 4 AP instead of 6 AP, then even if they are unlucky with modifier (- 4 AP), they would have 8 AP total for moving and after first diagonal move they would still have 4 AP for a straight move. But they stopped after first diagonal move.

Is there some connection with turning rules?

The cheap diagonal first move only applies to the pursuers. Otherwise pursuers chasing diagonally will always be 2AP further from catching the enemy than those pursuing orthogonally.

Now it all makes sense. Thank you for the answer.

It also now makes sense to me as well - it was my slingers the triarii caught.

It was a harbinger of the way the battle ended up, as WogelWeid methodically disassembled my Carthaginian army
