Division E
Kerait (Roman with Bithynian allies) defeats rs2excelsior (Samnites with Etruscan allies) 62-55
Close match, and I wasn't optimistic about this one at the start. The Samnites deployed their usual horde of medium foot on a large hill with rough terrain. I placed a token force of thureoporoi and Spaniards on the hill to hold them off and placed my legionaries on a plateau of intermediate height abutting the great hill. The Samnites surged forward on the hill and broke my medium foot on the hill almost immediately with their fearsome impact POA.
Meanwhile, on their right flank, the legionaries had to contend with Etruscan cavalry, which caused significantly more damage than expected, delaying the reinforcement of legionaries to the plateau when the buoyant Samnites began pouring onto it to face the legionaries. I thought I had lost when the melee commenced and losses mounted on both sides because Samnite manpower was much greater than mine. But the morale of the Samnites' Etruscan allies broke and they fled, and with more legionaries free to fight the Samnite foot there was a collapse of morale on one side of the Samnite army. A large proportion of Samnite foot fled into the woods and never returned, allowing those legionaries to wheel about and fight the remaining Samnites on more advantageous terms.
After the two armies had ground each other down substantially, the Romans were ahead a little, allowing them to win.
Thanks for this fun game, rs2excelsior.

Kerait (Romans with Bithynian allies) defeats DryNick (Hannibal in Africa) 61-38
The game felt somewhat tarnished after veteran African spearmen, the cream of the Carthaginian infantry, fragmented after a single charge from the Roman legionaries. This created a hole in the Carthaginian lines and facilitated Roman victory.
That said, I believe that the strategy I learnt from Snugglebunny's videos to face Carthage with as much infantry (and little else) as possible paid off as it did against deeter. DryNick invested a lot of money in lights, elephants and cavalry which much reduced the size of his main battle-line. The Romans could absorb damage from lights and cavalry through sheer numbers, the length of their line prevented easy flanking, and elephants didn't make much of an impact because there was no Roman cavalry to smash.

Re: Reserve places now available . . .
It is almost certain that I will not be able to offer you a place this season. I will add you to the invitation list for Season 10 which starts on February 1st. Invitations will go out on Monday 18th January.
Btw, this is the "Stickies" part of the forum. The Rules and Guide are 6-7 threads underneath this one.

Morat (Lombards) beat Kerait (Romans with Arab Allies) 50-25
Lombards raced into an early lead by striking at the Roman right, doing significant damage before the Roman left got involved (though losing units to a troublesome auxilia unit that dodged the lancers). The Romans then started to fight back, flanking the cavalry and beating up the archers. In the end the Lombards were grateful to end up with the win, the tide was definitely turning.
The game ended quite suddenly with a couple of Roman units breaking - so I was not able to congratulate Kerait on a hard fought battle. So I'll record my thanks here for a well played game!

We were having 2 fantastic, close contests and then in this game I had 3 rallies from routed in a single turn which took XLegione to 25% and won me the game. Very, very lucky and an unfortunate end to a great game. Thanks and well played.

angel42052 (Ancient British 60 BC-80 AD) beats TomoeGozen (Kingdom of Soissons 461-486 AD with Germanic Foot Tribe 260-599 AD allies) 52-42
My chariots were able to distract a large part of of his forces. I had the upper hand until the last few turn where TomoeGozen having dispatched/scattered my chariots turned additional forces on my army. Had the battle lasted ten more turns he would have won.
