A stream initially separated the two armies; the Selucids deploying on the far side with a mass of pikes in the center, a few horse on their right anchored on woods and a number of medium foot in a large rough patch anchoring their left. Their front was screened by a small number of light foot. The Ptolemaic army deployed a weaker body of pikes and spear in their center with both flanks anchored on hamlets held by zealots. A superior number of medium foot were massed on our right in a rough patch beyond the hamlet on that flank. Our more numerous horse were held intially in reserve behind our heavy infantry.
As defenders, our plan was to await the initial enemy advance beyond the stream then envelope his right with our superior numbers of horse and his left with our superior numbers of lights and mediums supported by a horse. We hoped our weaker center with the delaying hamlets would hold out long enough for the flanks win out.
Our plan essentially unfolded as we hoped, we drove back the opposing lights on our right and enveloped and destroyed the opposing mediums with the help of our horse. On our left, while not destroying the enemy horse, we managed to drive through them and around the enemy rear, swinging in on the raging battle in the center. While the Selucids did manage to punch through, breaking one phalanx and disrupting another with the help of one of their surviving lancers, our horse and mediums fell on the flanks and rears of enough of their infantry to panic their army.
