I like paired games... I would suggest to keep current format in all divisions, but all games must be paired.

Division C

Karvon (Arab (Conquest) 629-637 AD) defeated MorkinThe Free (Polish 966 AD-1057 AD) 56-26 for a 4-0 Win.

Battle was joined at a series of mountain passes; tiny ones on the extreme left and right, and a large one in the center. Our right flank was further blocked off by a large unfordable river. A string of hills ran through the central pass. A massive forest lay on the Polish side of the pass covering their whole right extending to the edge of the field. On the Polish left a smaller forest and hill overlooked the tiny pass along the riverbank. A large forest and adjoining march partially masked our left flank.

We brought our maximum contingent of light and medium bow to screen and weaken the expected Polish line holding the pass. We recruited a 3 Bedouin medium foot force to screen the woods and marsh on our left. We took a token mounted force of a couple of Bedouin lancers and a camel to serve as a mobile reserve on our right. The bulk of our army was our veteran spear, deployed in the center opposite the central and right passes.

The Poles had an assorted mix of shieldwall and some dismounted cavalry set to seize the pass, screened by a long line of light foot. Behind the heavy infantry was a line of massed bow and some mobs. Clearly, the Poles were going to advance to the slopes of one of the hills in the center of the pass and hope I would exhaust myself trying to storm the place while under heavy fire with my spears. For a lack or viable alternatives, that is essentially what we did.

Our light foot screen bravely trotted into the pass under a hail of arrows from the opposing light and massed archers. My spears moved up behind them with my own massed bow following up. On the right, Some Polish cavalry appeared in the tiny pass. I detached a couple of spears to drive them back and followed them up with my mobile reserve. On the left, a lone Polish light archer crept out of the pass and began skirting around the woods on my left.

My screening lights got pretty shot up and I retired the survivors to make way for my assault. My massed bow, overlooking my spears on the lower slope of a hill opposite the Polish line unleashed a concentrated fire and fairly quickly disrupted a couple of units. The hill the Poles were defending covered about 2/3rds of the pass and a couple of their units on the right end of their line were thus on level ground. Thus, when I launched my assault, I was able to get stuck into several units at very good odds, while the rest of the line had to grin and bear more marginal chances of success. The Poles fought had, but we fairly quickly began grinding through them, particularly on their right.

In the meantime, our right wing probe got ambushed. The Polish cavalry retreated and a number of massed archers poured arrows into our advancing spear. As we tried to close with the bows, the cavalry reappeared and our disrupted spear didn't last too long. The surviving spear and mobile reserve fell back out of bow range, only to see even more bows pour out of the woods. We were out of range though, so nothing came of their surge.

On the left, we detached one of our Bedouin foot to assist some of our surviving light bow to track down the lone Polish scout. For several hours we stalked them before finally trapping them. Our other Bedouins swung wide and swept through the fall left pass and probed into the forest beyond, but found nothing.

Meanwhile, in the center, The Poles frantically threw in some mobs in an attempt to stem our break through on their right. These were all quickly shredded by our spears further shaking Polish morale. All along the slope, our spears slowly but surely gained the upper hand and the Polish front line collapsed. The bowmen behind attempted to hold the line, but it was too late and the Polish army streamed back down the pass for the safety of home.

The final scene...

Blagrot (Babylonian 626-539 BC with Median 626-550 BC allies) beat gamercb (Assyrian 681-609 BC) 51% - 10%

Overall the archery went the way of Babylon and the initial charge of the guard foot and hoplites double-dropped both their opponents and opened the way to the squisher targets, thanks for the game

I have to say, I found the format really good. To be able to play many armies rather than sticking to one was great. If it came to a vote I would vote for it in other leagues. I think determining the scenarios prior to the games starting was the best way of doing it.

So I just see that Ian told in better English :) what I wanted to say :)
This concept worries me....I am a first year player. I like the concept of having "an army." Reminds me of the time in my youth when I spent a lot of time and money painting "an army." Maybe we don't do it in other leagues?

Division C

SawyerK (Seleucid with Lsyimachid allies) defeated Ulysisgrunt (Jewish plus Roman allies) by 60-43.

The battlefield was laden with rough ground forcing the Seleucid pikes to occupy a limited section within their side of the map. Their effort was greatly aided by a three by three square of enclosures to the side of an open hill which kept the pikes and medium units from being flanked by the much more numerous and nimble theopheroi of their opponent. A very hard fought match to the end.

Division E

Morat (Lombards) beat Rob123 (Germans/Dacians) 61-47.

Lombards raced into an early lead as their cavalry made significant inroads into the opposition. The Germans then fought back: their warbands doing real damage in the centre. In the end the Lombards just had enough - but this was a hard fought battle that wound up being very, very close.

Thanks to Rob123 for a great game.

carpenkm (Normans) draws with wmpryor (Irish 900-1049 AD with Viking 900-1049 AD allies) 66 -62

What a battle. One of the best games i've played. The battle had everything - a proper bloodbath. Almost every unit was disrupted, fragmented or already long routed. Only one general left alive.
The battle ebbed and flowed with light infantry clinging to rocky slopes and fragmented units seemingly fighting to the last man. Both armies reached 60% on the 23rd turn.

Thank you wmpryor for a great game and a real nail bitter until the end.
