How to set the unit transport?

Post by dobrodukh »

How to set the transport unit on the map. For example, a truck for infantry or a truck gun?

Select the transport in the unit list at the bottom.
Ctrl-click on the unit on the map.

Note that some units may not accept a transport for some reason. For instance, I was unable to assign a transport to one of the AT units (can't remember which).
This may be by design or a small bug. Only the devs know 8)

Apologies for thread necromancy but I'm struggling with the transport thing.

Does the process above still work as for me it just replaces the unit with a truck?

Moreover, I'm trying to add Italian Engineers to the unit roster (or 'Reserve' list as per the Editor Manual) so they can be deployed as desired. That I can do but I'm unable to add transport to a units in the unit roster.

To be clear, I've tried cntrl and clicking the units, left click, right click, I tried ALT and SHIFT too but no joy.

Tried it with a different unit but still no joy.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Frustrated of Cheltenham.

It mainly matters if a transport is supported by a unit. This is defined in units.csv in the transport column.
E.g. you can't add a transport to a cavalry unit or a foreign transport to an infantry unit of a different nation, as long as these transports don't show up in the unit's transport support-list.

If supported then selecting a transport in the lower list and afterwards Ctrl+LMB on an already placed unit should attach it. The unit graphic in the scenario editor is replaced by the transport unit but the tooltip still reads the original unit-name.

Thank you Horst,

Odd, that is exactly the result I get, a picture of the truck... although sometimes as it does not always work - I'm even doubting my keyboard now :?

But, when I then launch the scenario there is just a truck available with the new unit name (for testing) but no proper unit.

For the record I'm trying to add the Italian engineers to the 4 player Tunisia scenario as a test.

Unit Navigator tool says Italian Engineers can have a truck so that I know is ok.

Struggling with understanding what I'm doing wrong. Ho hum.

Sorry, the condition "sometimes" is always difficult to reproduce for others. As long as your CTRL-key isn't malfunctioning and there is actually something like an infantry unit where you place this transport onto then it should work fine. Even without CTRL, you would only select the engineer unit with LMB without placing a transport.
You can still check the tooltip if it reads transport or engineer name in the scenario editor before you run a map-test.

To sum up:

1. Have an engineer on the map in the editor
2. Use Horst's method to get a truck for it, so select "a transport in the lower list and afterwards Ctrl+LMB on an already placed unit" - your engineer on the map.

Note:
This works for units present on the map. If you need an engineer/truck in the deployment pool for the player to deploy where he wants, place it on the map and add the truck as above, then write a trigger to undeploy it at scenario start.

You can simply undeploy the eng/truck unit and it will be moved to the reserve list ready to be deployed in the game.
You don't have to write a script/trigger for this.
Unless I misunderstood something here...

Yeah, should work. Completely forgot about it, as I never use it.

Thank you all, got this working now, 'undeploy' very useful too so that I can get the unit, with a truck, in the reserve list.

Ta :)
