Rommel Difficulty: Captured Units / Upgrades

I am finally playing GC East on Rommel and things have gone very well so far. Just finished GC39 with all DVs. It obviously helps a lot knowing the maps but every time I play GC39 I remember how much I love it. A manageable number of units to deploy, interesting and fun scenarios combined with a technically inferior (with the exception of a few Hurricanes and Seafires in Norway) foe. What’s not to like?

I am about to start the dreaded GC40 now (my least favorite GC) and one thing that struck me is what to do with all the captured tanks I will get if things go according to plan. When I have played on General, Field Marshal etc I have always sold the Somuas but kept the Char B1s since I find the Chars very useful in those early years. Once they become obsolete I have always upgraded them to later model Panzer IVs or Tigers.

But what would you recommend me to do with them on Rommel with prestige so limited? Is it better to sell the Chars and buy green Panzer III/IVs for the prestige you get when disbanding them? You then get a cheaper upgrade path instead of paying the full price for the upgrade once the Chars becomes obsolete.

On my last play through of GC39-45 East on Field Marshal I did not buy a single tank unit since there are so many tanks that are awarded for free and available to be captured but I am thinking I might have to rethink that strategy on Rommel since I do not know what my prestige situation will be like later down the line.

I find that I do not ever really need to buy tanks. I use captured equipment and if awarded a really good hero on one of them I know that I will upgrade later to a better tank once the current goes obsolete.

For example, on my Ultimate playthrough I use Heinz Rondorf and Albert Kerscher and all my SE Tanks on most if not all scenarios. But in the West I am using the captured KV-1C and KV-1B as they help fill in a gap, and hoping to be awarded a good hero with them so I know whether or not to keep them.

East I have been awarded 1 KV-1B with movement that I use a lot and will upgrade eventually to a King Tiger once I see what 2nd hero he may be awarded with. All else I sell. The Char-B's are too slow, Somua not strong enough to remain effective long. All T-34's are too vulnerable on Ultimate difficulty. So I sell them. I like to have a deep bench of viable options but at the difficulty level I am playing at, I cannot invest the time and or prestige to make so many units viable.

All 5 of my SE tanks do not have more than 3 stars experience in Stalingrad Docks. That raises there vulnerability and makes me worried about what will happen in Tatsinskaya.
