Computer wargame from the commanders view point

Post by Peter_the_Grate »

The majority of computer war-games are viewed from about 200 metres above the battlefield and everyone is instantly responsive to new orders and unfolding events - not very realistic but easier to program and play. How about controlling a battle from the Commander-in-chief's position, 3 metres above the ground on a horse. She/he gets a better view if on a hill, otherwise the view is blocked by the nearest unit, terrain, dust, fog, etc. Like Caesar at the River Sambre, the commander can join the fight to steady a wavering unit and the player gets to kill Gauls and maybe get a debilitating wound or worse. The Battle of Austerlitz had a front of 11 kilometres and once Napoleon's corps were committed, he had to rely on his Marshals to correctly interpret his orders under very trying circumstances, unless Napoleon was close by.
Lots of potential here for a first-person shooter wargame. Plenty more to consider but hopefully this sows a seed.

Twenty or so years ago there was a napoleonic game (Waterloo IIRC). A very interesting concept, but the computers of the day and/or the programming wasn’t fully up to the task. I’d love to something like this.

I usually refer to most FOW rules in computer games as “Borg” FOW, what one unit sees, all units see. Mind you I’m glad to at least have that in games, it’s better than the omniscient POV you get in most board games.
