You must login the game with your Steam key and install the game with Steam to get the Steam version.
You can have both Steam and Slitherine versions installed on your computer. Steam only updates the Steam version.
Savegames are normally the same.
That’s what I did for Panzercorps 1 (I installed both versions), I think it’s the same for Panzercorps 2 but I don’t really see the point of installing both versions for panzercorps 2.

I will give a longer explanation since not every one may know what Steam is.

Steam is an app that provides a platform to play computer games.
You have to install the Steam app on your computer.
Once you have the app installed, you can authorize PzC2 on Steam.
The Steam code is on your Slitherline game page.

Steam auto updates handles the updating for you.

Steam is used for the PzC2 Beta program because of the auto update and because it allows the developer to monitor player stats.

If you buy from Slitherline you get a free Steam code.
If you buy from Steam you don't get a Slitherline code.

Some people love Steam, some hate it.
You do not have to give Steam any money, you can use it for free.

Unless you want to take over an hour to update the game after every single patch, then use Steam.

If you don't want to use Steam, then be prepared for a very long install and update process.

If you never had Steam (or played games on Steam), you will need to install it first. It is a one time thing.

I owned the original PC1 on CD that I bought directly from Slitherine when it came out. I remember having issues and long waits for updates too. At that time, Panzer Corps wasn't available yet on Steam. We later got a code for a free copy for Steam if we already owned the boxed version. I haven't looked back. Of course, I have many games on Steam and never have been one of those who steals games by copying them from friends even back in the day, so I had gotten most of my games on Steam even before Panzer Corps.

As others have said, updates are fast and painless and automatic (though you can set it NOT to install patches if you wish). I do not see the point of having both installed and after the Steam version of the original came out, I no longer used it. You login to Steam and that's it! You can install and uninstall games from Steam. And when you want to play it again, you don't need keys or other stuff to reinstall the game like you do if you have the boxed or digital download version from elsewhere.

Well, I give up... that seems to be the only answer from others and from Matrix/Slitherine--use Steam. For reasons that are too long and complicated to mention here, I really didn't want to use Steam for this.

So, I get it. Either use Steam or use a painfully slow and cumbersome update process. Those are my two options.

I agree, I want to know why it take me three hours to install and patch this game? And no the answer is not to "just play it on Steam".
I get that the installer was probably packaged for Steam, Slitherine seems to be sliding more that way. Heck even the rerelease of Shock Force 2 was delayed because it wasnt ready for Steam. Like WTH does that have to do with those os us who buy directly from you? Do you want us to continue to buy from you?

I was very resistant to installing Steam right through until PzC2 came out and I bought the FM edition through Steam because of the discount. I then found that I could get Steam keys for most of my other games purchased through Slitherine on this site, so I added the keys to Steam. I also have a Surface 3 laptop which wasn't wasn't up to the specs for running PzC2 and was overjoyed to be able to stream it via Steam from my main PC to the Surface, and it runs flawlessly this way, which saved me the considerable expense of upgrading it. I'm not saying you need to use Steam, nor will it bother me if you don't, but there are a lot of advantages with managing your games, upgrades and installations through it. There's nothing to lose from trying it out.

It is a shame that the dlc's (as well as the main installer) take so damn long to download...hours.
I will add, I can accept the 5.4gb download for the main game but...it is ridiculous that the 'dlcs' (+1gb download that offers, maybe 10-50mbs of data) take all of 2 seconds to add to the game once they are downloaded & extracted but take over an hour for that process, for each one.
It feels like there is no love for us Slitherine purchasers. :)
