You are not the first to raise this.

The differentiation between the different grades is mainly based on the shield patterns, not the helmet.

After all, the best hoplites were the Spartans, and they usually wore the simple pilos helmet - like the Citizen hoplite here. But others wore other helmets. Each hoplite supplied his own equipment, and the best equipped might come from the richest, least warlike city.
