Round duration - OOB vs FOG2 tournaments

Post by Chema_cagi »

Maybe it has been already mentioned, but I was surprised by the duration of OOB tournament rounds, when compared to FOG2 ones (on average 14 days per round, which not always last even 20 turns).

Seven days for 20 turn battles mean an average rythm of 3 turns/ day, which some players seem to have difficulty to keep.
I've found myself with 2 games unfinished, and I was unable myself to end properly a match because I had to go out of city for 3 days in a meagre summer holiday :) .

It's not a complaint about any player, I understand perfectly that people have RL duties and that and this is, after all, just a game.

But I would humbly suggest to tournament directors to consider making the time spans a little longer.

Yeah, I haven't been able to finish any single game in the current tournament yet...
Such a disappointment :-(

These first tournaments are for testing, hence the limited time. I'm sure the 'official' ones will provide ample time. They really have to, to keep my interest...

Slitherine/Shards said that they're considering 10-days-per-round tourneys.

10 days looks a wee bit short, especially for scenarios lasting more than, say 15 turns.
I'm afraid that few games will reach the last turn.

Perhaps the third test tournament should be about testing the duration rather than the maps...

These first tournaments are indeed intentionally short time-scale. By doing a 7 day turnaround, I've ensured that all the maps have got a least some play. Means that I'm more confident when it comes to doing the next rounds.

My plan is for the next tournament to go live later this month, with 10 day rounds and 15-turn maps. Which should be less than 2 rounds per day for most players.

I don't really want to go any higher than that as that'll mean tournaments taking 6 weeks to play, and many of the engaged players will be twiddling their thumbs for a lot of that time!

Would it be possible to take into account player's time zone when selecting an opponent?
I believe most of the slowness in MP games is caused by big difference in time zones.

If the tournament login had a field for time-zone the devs could better match players.
We did that for the first OOB-tournament (way back).
