Question for Encircling & Destroying the supply line
Hi,
My question is how do you Encircle units so that their supply becomes Zero ? Can you encircle a City to bring its Supply to Zero ? Major cities like Paris & Moscow have their own supply so they can't be encircled to bring their Supply to Zero. What bout the minor cities ? If you encircle minor cities will their supply get affected ?
How can you cut off supplies to units by encircling. Does it mean that unit has to have a direct Hex connection to the nearest City / Port ?
Thanks in advance.
Derek

The impact of encircling minor cities is not on the city itself but on units encircled too that now must trace their supply to this city. Assuming that they were at supply level 5 previously, meaning that they could trace supply to a capital, their supply now drops to level 3.julyderek wrote:Thanks. What about encircling Minor cities ? What will be the effect of that ?Stauffenberg wrote:Encircling cities means that the supply level drops from 5 to 3 (not to 0). So encircling works better if you can isolate the units from any city.
An encircled (minor) city will provide level 3 supply indefinitely to any units that can trace supply to it. Only when it's captured does it cease supplying there units.

If you really want to make the most of encircling, you have to cut units off from cities. Sometimes that means concentrating on taking and holding the city itself as your primary objective. Units that can't trace to a city, port, or surface ship are basically screwed. If you have time to wait them out, you can annihilate them without taking any casualties. Units supplied at 3 are still fairly dangerous.
BTW, strictly speaking, there are no "minor cities." Or else, all cities are "minor" save capitals.

Another subtly about supply (which was brought out in another thread) is that the max number of steps a unit can repair is equal to its supply level. That is, a unit at supply level 5 can repair up to 5-steps. A unit at 1 only 1-step. And a unit cut off (i.e., supply level 0) no steps.MarkClark wrote:If you really want to make the most of encircling, you have to cut units off from cities.
