In some random encounters in the campaign the game suddenly ramps up the difficulty without any explanation, those encounters are almost impossible to win without a Battlestar present
The only 8000 fleet that could win in those cases would be this:
3 Heracles - Flak field it is absolutely necessary for the non-stop missile barrage and sometimes with Nukes Flak field also protect your fleet
3 Atlas - Having Taipan and Assault Raptor squads is necessary for the number of enemy squads and help the fleet to destroy another ships
2 Minotaur - To also destroy enemy squads
To be honest, from the moment I unlock the Artemis, the officers of my twelve defence fleets get one as soon as they have enough points for it. I find them far too well rounded to leave out. So by the time I unlock the Heracles in Sin and Sacrifice, most of my fleets are already configured. The main exceptions being Aerilon, Picon and Scorpia, which get their Jupiter's added to them; meaning Demeter, Athena and Archeron require some asset adjustments to accommodate.
By the time I get to Resurrection, I immediately build a Minerva, Artemis, Heracles, Berzerk and Celestra to make the most out of the veterancy system. My version of BSG-75 comes in at exactly 8000 points.
I have to stress that if you come up against an 8000-9000 point carrier group, you’ll struggle immensely to keep those six Taipan squadrons alive. I can deploy seven Viper Mk. II squadrons, and a straight up dogfight is still ill advised, even if I deploy them in a so-called ball of doom. The sheer number of raiders can leave the Cylons with at least four or five squadrons still on the board once the vipers are eliminated, and they can inflict significant damage on any ship they target. There are ways to mitigate the threat of course. You can position your entire fighter wing behind a flak screen in the hopes the raiders take the bait and fly through it, or deploy debris mines directly in their path. The later strategy does require an excessive amount of micromanagement to prevent your own squadrons flying through the debris field however, and you would need to replace at least one ship with either a Ranger or Janus to have the best chance of causing sufficient damage.
Essentially, battlestars are far too useful for me to leave out, because even without fighter cover, I can manage to take out the surviving raiders with the point defence turrets and hit the Cylon capitals hard enough with the battlestar artillery to win the day .
I know this doesn’t give you what you wanted, but I have thousands of campaign battles under my belt from multiple play throughs, and I just can’t recommend going without at least one battlestar unless you absolutely have to.
