Poland - fiinally !

Post by o_t_d_x »

I won the first poland scenario (and of course the saarland maps) and i have to say i really like the 39 dlc. It improves the things that i liked in spain and brings some great new battles (and no allied ai :D ). People that fear that the french part, before poland, could be small and boring: Easy answer: absolutly no !!! I always thought that the phony war (thats how the brits call it as far as i know) was a joke without real action. But 130 french divisions ag. 26 german divisions is definitly no joke.

You have to fight french hardware with the weapons, you normally use against poland. Tough to fight charles b with pz38s. (luckily i had prototype PZIIIG) I like the "slow the french down" missions where you lay mines, or make raids to their supply depots. And the final defence of the siegfried line was really great. Didnt think that i would make it, because i didnt play ideally at the first maps and had all the time serious prestige problems. Only green new troops reduced my whole armys experience drastically and despite the cheaper replacements, i had to give up the left victory town. After a fighting withdrawel, desperate defensive fighting and simultanously encirceling enemys at the other flank to at least get a little prestige, i started my counter offensive to retake the city. Took the bonus air fields two times, because i thought "raid" means i dont have to hold em.

The tschech map is an easy encirclement tutorial BUT if you want the bonus, its much more challenging. I didnt make it, because a bridge engineer with health one camped forever in a vic hex, so i had to kill him.

The fst. polish map is a big defensive fight. Won it first try, even taking kutno (bonus) would have been possible. But here i had the chance to solve my prestige problems, so i encircled two polish armys completly and ignored the bonus target. So far i am very happy with the dlc. Hope they fix the arty support bug soon i want to start with spain again.

One thing i noticed: on the fst. poland map i had a loooong lasting arty duel: I never killed a single health, the enemy arty took my health every time. The ridiculous thing: i had a 210 mm arty and the enemy a 75 mm arty. Ok he was on a hill, but my shells are tripple stronger. Seems to be another example for strange combat results in pc2. But thats onyl a minor issue that has nothing to do with the dlc.

First impression: Very well done devs !

Finnland finally !

Now that i played poland (the south route) i must admit, that poland feels a little short. 4 maps ? I won them all first try, the first was big fun and warshaw too. Lwow and the 3d (i dont remember the name) where smaller and easy. Warshaw is a little bit like stalingrad, but better in my opinion.
On the 3d map the soviets shoot at me all the time, so i had to kill some of them. Nothing in the end briefing, no reaction ... nothing. And it wasnt the occacional attack, they severly bombarded me with double katjuscha, they shot my planes etc.. I think a little bit of text should explain, how the soviets reacted, loosing entire batallions ag. germany. And how they explain, that they focus german troops, even when polish are in range and closer to them.

Generally i had more problems with the french, then the polish.

My impression till now: i like the fight ag. the french more, then ag. the polish. Best scenario so far: Sigfried line defence.

And tomorrow i will start finland.

I enjoyed the Finish scenarios, even if there were no Finns. I also found the Saar battles very fun and interesting; even if the logistics of moving a core from the Saar to Poland in the dates given are a little "magical".

It reminded me of SCW Ebro, but it's now the player who has all the artillery on hills. Time to take revenge on the AI for that earlier river defense hell.

Well you can thank historical research for this. Apparently one of the reasons the French/German border is set the way it is, was for the express reason of deterring French aggression. That might sound bizarre in a 1940s context, but you have to look back to when those borders were actually set. Which was the early 1800s. Back then during the Napoleonic Wars, when French aggression was so high, they're literally called the 'Napoleonic' Wars.

So giving all the Germans the good high ground is both historically accurate and geographically accurate. And if you think about it, was one more straw on the back of the French camel that contributed to their Saar Offensive not going so well for them...

I would loooove to play ebro (which i really like because its challenging) WITHOUT allied ai. Or at least without arty support bug. A little rework of the spain dlc would be great. Especially an extra prestige pool for the ai.
