Deploying "invisible" Battle Groups

Post by internationalplayboy »

Having read Deploying Battle Groups at pages 145/6 I understand that those in ambush or on an outflanking march are omitted from initial deployment.

The rules go on to state at page 146 "Thus the correct number of battle groups must be deployed in each batch, until all visible on-table battle groups have been deployed".

My main question is: if a BG would be hidden from the enemy by an appropriate piece of intervening terrain, and thus not visible, is it deployed anyway or just when it becomes visible to the enemy?

The rules give me the feeling that such invisible battle groups must be deployed regardless of their invisibility to the enemy. But can anyone clarify the position?

Thanks in advance

Invisible BG are not placed, up to 3 ambush markers are placed instead, even if you have no ambushes or flank marches. Thes are then revealed to be dummy or real once enemy can see the markers

A longer answer is really needed but then I would have to stop drinking

Can someone take over?

There are no such things as invisible BGs.

There are:
BGs on a flanking move;
BGs in ambush;
All other BGs

So if a BG is in ambush and therefore not visible it is omitted from the deployment sequence. It is not placed until seen or moved per rules.

Thanks for interrupting the essential pre battle prep of boozing to clarify this for me. Traditionally, I've always performed better with a raging hangover.

Now where did I deploy my pint?

Ah Hazelbark suddenly things are getting a little cloudy. Maybe it's all this drinking. The BG I have in mind is not in ambush it's behind a terrain piece (such as a large hill or wood) and out of sight of the enemy. I'm aware that to be in ambush a BG has to be in a terrain piece.

My point is simple: if a BG is out of sight of the enemy and not in ambush or on a flank march when is it deployed?

All BGs that are not in ambush or on an outflanking march must be deployed at the relevant point in the deployment order.

A BG can be in ambush behind a wood or hill. There is no requirement to be in terrain, just to be invisible from any part of the opponents deployment area.

Indeed there are no on-table invisible BGs in FOG - that's a reference to other rules.

All FOG BGs are set out as one of 3 things:

On a flank march
On the table as BG
On the table as an Ambush marker

That's it. The end
