Regarding missile phases.

The game that will "ruin friendships", ICBM allows up to 8 players to engage in total nuclear war. The winner shall be the one who lost the least.

Regarding missile phases.

Post by playwars »

In the game, missiles seem to have 3 phases : takeoff, cruising and descent. Those phases are of particular importance since ABMs can only intercept a missile during it's takeoff and descent phase, while laser equipped satellites can only intercept them during their cruising phase. Except that there is no way of telling when a missile is in which phase, which sometimes seems to have prompted players such as Rimmy to question if certain systems were working at all. Sure, their trajectory can be an indication if it's "curved" enough on the screen, but sometimes the trajectory is such that it's impossible to tell. Thus I propose that either the missiles or their trail change color according to the phase they are in. This would not only give players a better feel for the different windows of opportunity to shoot down incoming missiles, but also allow better estimation of where an enemy launch came from if it was spotted during it's takeoff phase (a missile using active takeoff boosters is after all quite obvious, most satellites used to detect missile launches use IR cameras to spot the telltale flare of a missile launch), but the launch system itself wasn't spotted.

Very interesting idea, actually.

In the game these phases are not reflected perfectly precise to make the gameplay a little simpler. For example, while satellites can shoot down the missiles only when they are high enough in space, AMB in the game can actually intercept the missile at any stage. This is a subject of some one-minute-to-do mod, but the default it this.
However the problem that Rimmy had was not about the altitudes, but about the possibility to target precisely. There are several types of radars and when some of them give just the fact that the missile (or aircraft) is there, others can give the precise position of a target to launch ABM/SAM. For the player it is not visible if a missile/aircraft can be targeted and this is the issue to deal with.

Ah, I see. I'd seen a video segment where a missile passed a groups of sams unhindered, only to be shot down as it started "curving" down. My bad, I didn't take into consideration if the radar was in range.

And you're right, it is the issue that should be dealt with then. Since it is very much possible not to see missiles before they impact, most people will assume that if they see them they can shoot them. I'd suggest a red crosshair on every missile on which your radars/sensors have a "lock on" if it wasn't kind of silly.

I've also noticed that missiles platform don't have a dumbfire mode ? Like a "fire at this position", even if there's nothing there. At least SSBNs don't seem to have it, which is a shame. While niche, it could be useful to be able to bombard a rough position if you knew there was a launch system somewhere there by seeing the missile trajectory, but didn't have a positive ID or location on what did it.

Hi, having played the game I can say that you can do this. You can just randomly target somewhere and say "shoot big bomb here and don't ask".

Nice ! Thank you for the answer !

I applied for the beta, but it's probably going to take a while before I can see for myself (provided I get accepted, otherwise I'll wait until release), so I might ask a bunch of dumb questions in the mean time ^^.
