Re: Tournament Diary and News . . .
Today I have done further monitoring of slow play in the tournament and I have offered advice to a number of players to ensure they are in the best position to win an adjudication should matches not be completed by August 16th.

Division A
harveylh - Thracian 680-461 BC with Greek 680-551 BC ally defeats XLegione - Babylonian 626-539, 45-9
The Babylonians had over half their army hidden in various woods on the battlefield. The Thracians were worried at the beginning but good scouting and deployment mitigated the Babylonian ambushes. GG.

Re: Themed Event: winners post your results here . . .
Themed Event semi-final
Ludendorf (Byzantines 600-649 AD) defeats harveylh (Avar 558-631 AD) 61-39%.
Enough to satisfy honour, but not enough to keep me in the tournament. Harvey dragged me over every rocky crag and through every deep foreboding forest and bog, my army dogged every step of the way by threat of ambush and hail of skirmisher fire. I was able to forestall any defeat-threatening ambushes and ground the Avar army down, but I remained exposed to defeat right to the very end, and only a lucky series of breaks saved me from the dreaded draw or a sudden reversal. Harvey was also very efficient in cycling in and out his units, which nullified the threat my massed archers posed. None of the units I targeted with them broke in the end.
Final score 1-1: harveylh goes through to the final 39-22 on the tiebreaker.

Division C
NikiforosFokas - Carthaginian, Hannibal in Africa 202BC drew vs Karvon – Thracian, Triballi 350 BC-46 AD with Getae 279 BC – 46 AD allies 33-20 for a score of 2-0.
Large forests walled off both flanks the Thracian side of the field. A large forest walled adjacent to a large gentle ridge walled of the Carthaginian left. Large gentle hills were also found in the Carthaginian center and on their right. Given the swiss army knife options of their list, I wasn't particularly keen on attempting a march against their side of the field and decided to concentrate my army in the woods on my left. I opted for a lot of skirmishers, light foot and horse, supported by a handful of cavalry. I had about a dozen or so medium foot, a mix of warbands, spear and peltasts. Most of my army was hidden at deployment. The Carthaginians deployed on the large hill on their left. 4 African spear formed the core supported by a around half a dozen Italian and Phoni medium foot, screened by half a dozen or so light foot and light horse. 5-6 cavalry formed up in reserve supported by 3 elephants.
Given this potent mix, I decided to keep my mediums in the woods and my cavalry hidden on my left initially. I sortied out with my lights in an attempt to overwhelm his smaller screen and maybe work around his flank to get at his elephants. Not knowing where the bulk of my army was exactly, the Carthaginians advanced cautiously to counter my lights. He move his cavalry up to lend close support to his own lights and kept his elephants back behind his heavier infantry and well out my reach. My lights descended on his screen and did manage to shoot up quite a few of his foot. However, he aggressively attacked and pinned quite a few of mine then launched his cavalry in to finish mine off. After a number of rounds of this, most of my lights were dead or fleeing.
He then advanced carefully towards the forests I held, probing with some of his surviving lights, medium and cavalry. He launched a limited attack with which I contained and began to work to envelop. Night fell before anything was resolved in this final stage of the engagement.
I would've been wiser to be more cautious with my lights and more closely supporting them with my own cavalry. Nik masterfully countered my opening and took advantage of my over aggressiveness. Very well played and an enjoyable match.
