Alliance and relations?

So, I have an ally.

I would like to stay below 50 relations as I only intend this to be a defensive alliance. I don't want to be dragged into offensive wars.

What to do?

One options (and not saying it is the only one) is "cooperate" instead of an "alliance." Keeping score below 50 ... how about using "gifts" and "insulting envoy" to try to keep the score near where you want it?" Again, not saying this will work ... just saying it's an option.

I would say, if you feel the other ruler is becoming too friendly, calling you 'my buddy' and inviting you tasting his wine and women ... Just a little insult from time to time will do some good, so he knows his place! Nothing too intense, so no foul words against his mother
