I played Massilia for a challenge. It was real challenge. Finally, I had to bail out.
I managed to get 3 provinces and hold the mountain back bone. But I really needed the income for 2 strong armies, but could only maintain 1. My alliance will Rome saved me a couple of times.
Because of the mountains moving an army could take 3-4 turns ...
It was an interesting exercise of which I learned much.
The mountains are very defensible, but attrition will ultimately do you in if you do not have a base of income.
