What Unit Type Should Leaders be Attached To?

Post by MarkWayneClark »

I searched for some commentary on this and found that the question was raised a couple of times but no one responded.

I typically put them in armor or mech. The advantage is A) you get to use their unique bonus for that unit, whereas putting them on an inf back from the lines wastes that; B) when offensive task forces get far forward, you know the leader is there to give aid to all the units.

The disadvantages are C) you expose the leader to greater danger; and D) if they get to far ahead of the bulk of the army, their bonus won't affect as many troops.

Any thoughts?

Armour shouldn't be too far out ahead...just try to keep units within range. Being with armour means they can be moved much more quickly (well...unless it's winter in russia :)...

This my typical assignment for leaders: Germany invading France (1940) - either armor of infantry. Germany in Russia (1941+) - 2 Armor, 1 Infantry (includes leader from France). Germany in North Africa (1940/1941+) - either Armor or Infantry, Germany in Italy (1942/1943+)- Infantry or Armor (will usually be the leader from North Africa) & German in France (1943/1944+) - Usually Infantry.

Italy - x1 - motorized corps

Russia - x3 - motorized corps

USA/UK - motorized, armor or infantry (whatever is most convenient at the time.

I prefer to put German leaders with armour for a few reasons. 1)Except for Russian winters, armour is the fastest unit you have, which allows the leader to get where needed ASAP. 2)If you keep up with tech increases, armour also tends to be the toughest unit to kill. 3)That 1 point bonus can make armour even deadlier (I tend to go with +1 attack leaders exclusively).

Italian with Motorized (mostly because I tend to concentrate on Inf tech for Italy).

Russian with armour (because winter screws motorized movement royally and I tend to put more Russian tech into armour than inf tech so that Russian armour can get quite deadly)

US & UK I got with armour or motorized. Whatever is handy.

If you decide to build a French leader I stick mine with the armour (which tends to go into Paris. Best defense French unit and if it's got level 8 entrenchment can cause the Germans a lot of pain to take it out).

I put them in corps units and keep them behind the main line. They don't see hardly any combat. Corps move just as well as tanks in the Russian winter, so my commanders never fall behind my advance no matter how fast I go.

I have another question. Does anybody know the range at which a leader can affect units?

8 hexes in any direction, including over water.

Another thing is that the manual says the leaders don't affect naval units, but they do. You can see this if you leave a ship in range of a commander for a few turns.

Leaders stay in infantry or motorized infanttry, behind frontline.

Armors are alwasy target of air and enemy's offensive.

To be fair, ANY unit with a leader is automatically a target of the enemy no matter the type it is.
