Skirmishers and command

Post by Jagger2002 »

I have been wondering about light troops and command. In a custom game, skirmishers appear grouped as independent commands without a general. So since they are not assigned to a general, do they suffer the loss of the free 45 degree turn? I assume not.

If I decide to a assign a skirmisher to a general's command and they are out of range of that general, do they then lose the free 45 degree turn?

Thanks!

Don't take it the wrong way but the answer is in the Quick Questions Thread on Rules.

No.

Skirmishers only benefit from being in a general's command if they are within a quarter of his command distance while that general is in combat (+1 in cohesion tests). It is a very bad idea to put a general with a skirmisher unit as the general will quickly die.

I have attached skirmishers to a generals command for rally purposes. In early game before the main armies clash, I have pulled back disrupted skirmishers and attached a general to see if I can rally it back up. Even in other points during the game, I have done the same if the situation is appropriate. However I wouldn't attach a skirmisher to a general's command if the skirmishers lost their free 45 degree turn when out of the general's command range.

I tried keeping a general back, attached to a light cavalry unit, in one game, in order to rally other units. I found that to be a waste of time, it is much more effective to have the general in the front rank, fighting, as then he affects combat and morale. Then if the general got into combat, he died in about two turns. A general does not raise the morale of the unit he is with, unless he is in combat. Putting a general with a unit just guarantees that the unit will try to rally every turn. If you move the light troops away from the enemy they will eventually rally anyway.
