2020 team event - Round Two
2020 team event - Round Two
The Emperor in Kyoto smiled with grim satisfaction as his servants presented him with the severed heads of the leaders of the rebel clans Toyotomi, Tokugawa and Oda. They had committed mass seppuku following their defeat in battle againstthe Uesugi clan. The Emperor's favoured retainer (favoured despite his rather barbarous name) bowed low and asked for permission to speak. It was duly granted and Uesugi Barayana, who hailed from the mountain village of Carisashursha in the far south, spoke thus,
"Most honourable star under heaven, I bring to you the words of the rebel Hideyoshi, moments before his death. Wise Emperor, spread the glory of your house and invade the lands of the filthy Joseon..."
"Hai!" declared the Emperor, "it shall be so..."
"And the heads of the rebels? And their bodies?" enquired Barayana
"Mount the heads of the gates of the city and burn the corpses of those rebellious scum" spat his Master.

So, after consultation with Brian, here is how Round Two will work.
Phase One, the Invasion of 1592 - one game each
As the victor, Kiwiwarlord, aka Brian, aaka daimyo of Team Tori, will draw up five games, matching each of his team against an opponent from Team Usagi, which will now take on the role of the Joseon in Korea.
Team Tori - will use the Japanese Invader list from 'The Imjin Wars'
Team Usagi-Joseon - will use the Joseon pre 1593 army list from the same module
Agricultural terrain, large armies, wide battlefield
Open battle
There will be no points for victory. We will just play for fun, for learning the game and for getting a feel for the historical events which were quite significant.
Phase Two, intervention of the Ming - one game each
The Ming send assistance to the beleagured Joseon, who start to hole up in cities and defensive strongholds hoping to overcome the now blunted Japanese attack.
Team Usagi-Joseon will determine the match-ups this time.
Team Tori - will use the Japanese Invader list from 'The Imjin Wars'
Team Usagi-Joseon - will use the a Joseon or Ming-Joseon list pre 1596
Agricultural terrain, large armies, wide battlefield
Defend battle, where the Joseon are effectivey besieged or
Attack battle, where the Joseon and MIng counter-attack at the player's discretion
Again, no points, just the fun of playing.
From there we will move to Round Three, and one more game each set in the period of the second invasion. This time it will be using 'very large' armies, so a new challenge which I hope will be enjoyable.

SnuggleBunnies (Joseon) defeats GentlemanRanker (Japanese) 48-16
Korean horse archers harassed the Japanese until they left defensive positions. As their line grew ragged in the advance, the Korean infantry, which had been sheltering in the woods, emerged to support the cavalry. Casualties, particularly among the poorly trained footmen, were heavy, but the result was not in doubt.

Would the Team Usagi player please mention if the Joseon are Attacking or Defending when posting the challenge.ahuyton wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 9:25 am

I have just picked a force without knowing if I am defending or attacking and will not know until I have to deploy my force.
I think that the Team Tori Players should know as there are troops more suitable at Defending than Attacking.

When a game is hosted it will say attacking or defending. That label is for the hosting player. So if it says attacking then you will be defending etc.

Re: 2020 team event - Round Two
ahuyton (Joseon) won against LFDLM (Japanese invaders) 53-24
I fear that this was an unhappy game for the Japanese invaders. We fought over a wide empty plain, crossed by a light stream with a few fields here and there. Seeing that, I took 6 or 7 cavalry units (bow and sword armed) and about 10 light horse. I had little confidence in my infantry, about 8 units mostly bow and heavy weapon armed and this lack of faith proved to be well placed.
Cedric advanced in a stern looking line. I sent my cavalry to the left flank to overwhelm the Jap cavalry and the LH to the right flank to harass and annoy, which they duly did. When the Japanese samurai finally managed to hit my small infantry centre they caused a lot of harm, but by then my cavalry had lots of freedom to roam around and catch lone units or pursuers in the flank. The Light horse shot a couple of units to bits and generally had fun.
So a nice game for me and my mounted troops, which I becoming rather fond of in SJ. Thanks, as always, to Cedric for a sporting and a pleasant game.

Re: 2020 team event - Round Two
By runner to our esteemed Diamyo Brian the Brain. Greetings.
GDod recently elevated to Divine status [thanks Alan] has defeated the righteous army of the Joseon Fybyyn to trial by battle 61 - 53 in a very close match that saw the Japanese slight lead yoyo between the combatants. In the end, terrain helped our forces keep their slight lead after a vulnerable disordered and fragged ashiguru ran shamefully into the forests to avoid the Joseon cavalry. Our samurai will certainly deal with them on their return home.
A great close game that was skillfully played by Fabian. However, the virus free province of Yo wei won is now secure.

Yes we are battling away, it's slow work with the Koreans as you have to spend so much time skirmishing before closing in to really fight.

SnuggleBunnies (Joseon) defeats baldrick (Japanese) 45-8
The Japanese adopted a defensive stance in Open ground surrounded by forests. The Koreans had to use a slow and cautious approach from all sides, with particular emphasis on their hordes of light horse archers.

Re: 2020 team event - Round Two
So the final result is:
Three victories for Team Tori
One victory for Team Usagi
The Japanese invasion has been stopped. Now the Ming send their forces in to help dispel the invaders.
