25mm MU

Post by stecal »

When the rules came out about a year ago there was a lot of discussion about using a 40mm MU instead of 1" (25mm) for 25mm games. What was the general consensus on that? What are 25mm players using assuming a 4x8 or larger table?

In the US we're using 40mm and adjusting the deployment area so it reflects the "correct" MU distance from the table center.

Ok, who is 'we'? (I'm in the US too)

Just curious.

We're finding that the 1 inch MU is ponderous for 25mm.

Buddy here and I have been playing 600pts on 4'x6' and up to 1000pts on 4'x8' and 5'x8'...all using the rules 25mm for 1 MU. We have had no probs. It makes the 25mm game 'different' than the 15mm game, in regards to certain distances (like commander ranges, within 3MU for testing to see friends break, all are 'shrunk' a bit)...but have totally enjoyed the game, no inclination to change MU size or deployment sizes or such.

My little group of old farts is using MUs of 1 and 1/2 inches. We are using 4 by 8 foot tables. Normally, we keep the points at 600-650 points. Usually, we use both starter armies from whichever suppliment we are in the mood to use. All this in 25/28mm scale.

If we ever try 800 points we will switch to using one inch = one MU. :wink:

In the Great Lakes area we have been using 40mm.. Though mind you i am still building my 25mm army. :wink: I think the guys down in the south use it too. If i wanted to use 1" i would stick to 15's.

What exactly are these adjusted deployment zones for 40mm? A straight multiplication of 14" from the center by 1.5 = 21" I know you aren't using 3" deployment zones....

We use a 5" x 1.5" base for 25mm/28mm to get the miniatures to fit.

So we use 2" to a MU on an 8' x 4' table and use 650points a side.

We use a 30mm MU for 25mm figures; this is convenient as it is a multiple of the base size, and means that the 2MU restricted zone is a base width, which is easy to eyeball.

40mm MU on an 8'x5' table is what has been done at Cold Wars and Historicon as well as tournaments in Columbus and Chicago. Not that this is the definitive word, but I had come to assume that it was the general consensus.

Where's the general discussion for US players? A group of us in South Bend, IN are starting FoG, so these Chicagoland tournaments/games are intriguing.

I use 40mm mainly and it works well. A different game as some hs said - especially C&C changes as the ranges in base widths are much smaller. FCs come into their own.

Feel free to grow the MU - it will be fine and more like the 15mm game The technical limit to avoid is in rout situations. A 25MU affects anything within 2 but not 3 basese. You should keep to this ideally or the balance of viral spred will change quite a bit. So a 3MU<= 40mm is a good thing for this. Hence 40mm being the aternative.

If you go beyond that and play with ave troops you will probably find games over too quickly as too many fail rout tests.

I'm confused.

With a 40mm MU and 60mm frontage for bases, I assume that a unit in line with routers and with 2 intervening files would still be have to test for a rout, e.g.:

BB1122

Where
B=broken unit files
1=1st friend files
2=2nd friend files

I assume that both units 1 and 2 would test for the break since 2*60 = 120 = 3 MU so 2 would be <= 3 MU from B and hence need to test. This would be more than would test with a 1" MU and 40mm frontage for 15mm figures.

So are you recommending that an MU < 40mm should be used for 25mm to avoid viral cohesion tests, or that any MU where 3 MU < 180 mm? Or should within be interpeted as meaning < 3 MU rather than <= 3 MU?

Chris
