Panzer Corps 2 - Axis Operations DLCs announced

Post by AlbertoC »

When Panzer Corps 2 launched in March we saw a very good critical response and we were joined by many thousands of players, all eager to fire up their Panzers and dive into classic WW2 gameplay on a beautiful new game engine.
With that launch there was also an offer of a Field Marshal Edition of the game that included the first two DLCs that will be coming to Panzer Corps 2.

Now we're finally ready to reveal details of the first two of Panzer Corps 2's exciting post-launch additions. We're calling them the new Axis Operations campaigns!

The New Axis Operations

Ever since Panzer Corps 2 was announced, a new Grand Campaign was by far the most frequent request which we heard from our players. It was hardly surprising, because the Grand Campaign was the most popular series of DLCs for the original game. We always listen to wishes of our community and give such things top priority. Axis Operations is our response to all of the people who wished for the creation of a new Grand Campaign. Simply put, it will be a series of campaigns that can be linked together, to form one giant, potentially 100+ scenario, behemoth of a campaign.

The Wehrmacht Campaign in Panzer Corps 2 is a good introductory campaign which many players have enjoyed and learnt the basics of Panzer Corps 2 gameplay in the process. But it was not without problems. Some issues which you, the community, raised were: missing mission debriefings, degrees of victory, historical heroes and the need for more varied objectives. In general, some players felt that the campaign did not offer enough storytelling and immersion in historical events.

Axis Operations will address all these issues. There will be more storytelling and interesting characters in these campaigns. There will also be a lot of innovation in terms of gameplay features, mission design, bonus objectives and rewards for fulfilling them, and more. The AI won’t remain the same either, so be prepared for some nasty surprises from your computer opponent!

The original Panzer Corps Grand Campaign stretched from 1939 to 1945, covering a whopping 144 scenarios. Our aim is to go bigger and better for the new Axis Operations. Even though Panzer Corps DLCs covered a lot of historical ground, we will still visit lots of places never explored before, and battles which you’ve never fought in the past. Find it hard to believe? Read on.

The first two DLCs included with the Field Marshal Edition of Panzer Corps 2 represent the first two links of the Axis Operations chain.

Axis Operations - Spanish Civil War

For starters we aren't going to begin in Poland this time. We're turning the clock back a bit further and the first campaign of the Axis Operations takes the player to the prelude to World War II, the Spanish Civil War, which we will be releasing on July 16th.
This campaign will give players the opportunity to experience content that not even the original Panzer Corps, with its extensive library of DLCs and expansion packs, managed to cover.

In Spanish Civil War you take command of the Condor Legion and in line with the Grand Campaign traditions you will be able to transfer your veterans, hardened by three years of fighting in Spain, to the next campaigns.

A unique and innovative feature of the Spanish Civil War campaign is how you will communicate and coordinate with your AI-controlled allies. Nationalist Spanish troops are not under your direct control, but you will still be able to issue high-level orders to your allies (like “Attack”, “Defend” and “Hold Ground”) so that their actions better match your own strategy. This creates a completely new experience never seen before in a Panzer Corps campaign. We can’t wait to hear your feedback about this new way of playing.

Axis Operations - 1939

The next part of our future content plans will release on August 27th, and it will be Axis Operations: 1939.

But once again... we're still not quite in Poland yet. Axis Operations 1939 starts in March of 1939, which I'm sure our history buffs will recognize as the important date when Germany marched into Czechoslovakia.

That scenario, by the way, has some very unusual mechanics attached to it. If you've ever wondered why they call them Panzer 35(t) and Panzer 38(t) you'll found out here.

After that... we're still not quite getting to Poland just yet. Something else happened in 1939, a battle that might have actually changed the course of history. There was a French invasion of Germany! We're going to explore that conflict.

To compare with the original Grand Campaign, we're already looking at more than 20 battles worth of new content before we get to the fighting in Poland in 1939.

After 1939 is completed, once again your CORE force will be saved, so that they will be ready for the next instalment of the Axis Operations.

Field Marshal Edition - 7 days Priority access

As mentioned above, the first two Axis Operations campaigns will release on July 16th and August 27th. We do have an extra surprise for all our Field Marshal Edition owners, though.

All of you who own the Field Marshal Edition will get priority access to the first two Axis Operations campaigns, a full seven days before their release dates!

Field Marshal Edition owners will be able to download, install and play Spanish Civil War on July 9th and 1939 on August 20th.

More information on both DLCs will be available in the future, with a complete description, scenarios list, details on new units and new screenshots!

Great news, but giving priority access to Field Marshal Edition owners is a low-blow that I had expected from the likes of EA, Ubisoft, etc., but not you guys.

This announcement is a 'Most-Welcomed' report that we have been anxiously waiting for!.
I like and approve of the 'New-Features' for the Game that have been brought to our attention... such as... .

"Spanish Civil War Campaign" is how you will communicate and coordinate with your AI-controlled allies.

This is much-appreciated... as it is discouraging to see your 'Allies' otherwise aimlessly plodding-about after the initial fray begins... to just basically stand there with their finger up their nose... doing very little to really help or to be an appreciable-viable Ally... in accomplishing your 'Mission' objectives!.

Thanks again for the Report!... the "Great-News"-Update!.

Wow - this is great news!

New mechanics, more storytelling and different victory objectives :D

This is awesome - and Spanish Civil War is rarely seen! Imagine You face Soviet tankers or Pilots and you meet them again in 1941! This could evolve into an epic story!

And Czechoslovakia - I never seen this before in a WW2 game (but I don`t know all games).

Wow again - thank you and keep on!

I knew it would pay of to buy the Field Marshal edition!

Of course it is nothing worth making a big fuss about, but the behaviour needs to be called out before it becomes a trend.

What next? Special tanks for those that pre-ordered? That's where big publishers are at now.

this all sounds amazing, especially with the amazing amount of maps before we even hit Poland. wets the appetite even more for any expansion into playing it all from the russian side.

looking forward to new mechanics, especially being able to cooperate with allies.

not sure I get all the hate for the field marshall guys getting this early, small bit of thanks for investing early

Yea I'm mystified by the inability for players to 'upgrade' their edition of the game. Please Slitherine, let people 'upgrade' to Field Marshal if they want to!

A nemesis system is part of the package.... I don't want to over promise anything, but the system is supposed to allow for units that you encounter in early campaign scenarios will return in later scenarios, provided they are not destroyed of course. And to help keep such units alive, they just might receive some Hero level abilities for that extra pinch of spice.
Point is, this brings much more direct player influence into the content, as the content is now changing based on things you do, or don't do, inside of the actual scenario itself.

Czechoslovakia doesn't show up because it's not really a traditional military operation. The invasion and dismantling of Czechoslovakia was relatively peaceful. We're putting our emphasis on the 'relatively' part, but we're also trying to stay true to history and historical objectives. Hence specific mention of Panzer 35(t) and Panzer 38(t), which at the time had a somewhat different designation.

Kerensky! I'm happy to notice that you brought up the subject of the..."Panzer 35(t) and Panzer 38(t)",... which... before [and I could be mistaken?] the Take-over of Czechoslovakia... the German Panzer forces did not yet have these Tanks!.

What-ever the Czech's actually named their Tank?... I not sure right now. However... I believe that it was at one of their Industrial plants _ "Skoda-Works"... that this particular model of 'Tank' was being produced. The Germans took over the plant and then continued to produce that very model as well as later on... other variants... such as... self-propelled-anti-tank models.

Kerensky - thank you for this information.

This sounds awsome;-)
I got the feeling these DLCs will be better then the Grand Campaign in Panzer Corps I.

According to Wikipedia
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%8CKD-Praga_TNH

the official german denomination was Panzerkampfwagen 35(t). The original czech one: LT vz. 35
The latter tank should have been respectively LT vz. 38 but was not yet introduced to the czechoslovak forces.

Will you mention the fact, that Poland also participated in the division of Czechoslovakia? Will the new formed state of Slovakia also take part in the invasion of Poland?

We see some Slovakian units participate in the huge Fall Weiss scenario.
Maybe they will appear in some form in the Polish part of AO 1939. I can't promise or reveal any of that information yet. :?:

But there was a different major faction that participated in the Invasion of Poland that hasn't gotten representation... I think they should make their appearance. Well, this time we'll try and make it more historically appropriate than what we saw in the original Grand Campaign 'Spoils of War' scenario. ;)

That was a fun scenario, but absolutely ahistorical in nature.

The former would probably only work as a short mention in the briefing, as the scale of it was quite small, accounting for 805 km² - two counties in Zaolzie. That's probably difficult to incorporate it into a scenario, but that would depend on the details of the map if the devs considered that.

As for the latter, I'm also curious - it was actually already seen in PzC 1 in the first scenario, where there was Slovak infantry on the map.

That first encounter with a certain tank was a sign of difficult things to come for the panzers later in GC... The idea of involving the USSR in the Polish invasion more sounds like a solid historical idea - it's again something often forgotten or ommited, but had a huge impact on the situation, and there are many ways it can be used, even as an actual race to cover more land and reach Bug river first. Since we can have the AI as an ally in the Spanish Civil War scenario, perhpas it's possible to have it as a ally and rival at the same time in another setting.

Škoda Works
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_Works

Image
Škoda produced LT-35 tanks, Panzerkampfwagen 35(t)
Image ...which are better known under their German designation Panzer 35(t).

A total of 434 were built; of these, the Germans seized 244 when they occupied Bohemia-Moravia in March 1939. In German service, it saw combat during the early years of World War II, notably the invasion of Poland, the Battle of France and the invasion of the Soviet Union before being retired or sold off in 1942.

These tanks were originally produced for the Czechoslovak army and were used extensively by the Wehrmacht in the Polish campaign, the Battle of France, Panzer 35(t) in France, 1940
Image ...and the German invasion of the Soviet Union. In July 1944 Škoda started production of the Jagdpanzer 38(t).
For the invasion of the Soviet Union, 6th Panzer Division had 160 Pz.Kpfw. 35(t)s. to support 4th Panzer Group's drive on Leningrad.

In July 1944 Škoda started production of the Jagdpanzer 38(t).
Image

The Jagdpanzer 38 (Sd.Kfz. 138/2), was a German light tank destroyer of the Second World War based on a modified Czechoslovakian Panzer 38(t) chassis. Jagdpanzer 38s first entered service in July 1944, and would eventually be assigned to a number of units, including infantry, Panzerjäger and Volksgrenadier divisions.

The Jagdpanzer 38 during production of the more than 2,800 vehicles built. Owing to the ease of production and high operating rates, the Jagdpanzer 38 came to serve as Germany's main tank destroyer in the latter period of the war, making an important contribution on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.

It was better armored than the thinly armoured earlier Panzerjäger Marder III and Nashorn with a sloped armour front plate of 60 mm sloped back at 60 degrees from the vertical (equivalent in protection to about 120 mm), carried a reasonably powerful 75 mm gun, was mechanically reliable, small and easily concealed. It was also cheap to build.

The Spanish Civil War ?

Yay !

Panzer General of 20 years ( ? ) ago began with the The Spanish Civil War . I suppose that many who played Panzer General then were teenagers or 20 - somethings . Now we are grey - hairs. So the nostalgia angle alone is priceless.

I wonder if the original Stuka variant , the Stuka A , the one with the huge wheel covers , makes it into the Condor Legion ?

It would be really neat and fun if your veteran Stuka unit of 1945 were to begin with Stuka A ' s .

It probably starts with Stuka B's . :( ( For understandable reasons though )

I have dreamed of seeing Stuka A's in a game for 20 years.

Maybe there is an idea for modders ?

I thought buying the Field Marshal edition was a bit self - indulgent and spendthrift , and ill - advised for an , as yet , unproven game.

But I wanted to support the endeavor as much as I could , as much as one person can anyway. It looks like that is going to pay off . :D

Maybe they could give those who bought the Field Marshal edition Stuka A's , and a Jolanthe insignia ?

( I'm strictly joking . While I do endorse DLC , ( game companies have to make a profit somewhere , somehow ) I don't care for exclusive , otherwise - unobtainable content either. )

You know what I want to see in the Spanish Civil War?
Adolf Galland's historical insignia.

But alas, we can't have everything we want.
*hint hint* there's a giant multi billion dollar company that might not appreciate what his chosen insignia was. :P

The more that 'Historically-Correct' input is included for 'Authenticity in the Game'... the more the 'Immersion and the more the Realism' there will be that will be generated for the 'Player' who is engrossed/involved playing the Game!. I'm very-much in favor of having "the original Stuka variant , the Stuka A ,with the huge wheel covers" included in the 'Roster' line-up... for "a-Espania".

Talking about 'Immersion & Historical Correctness'... so why not consider including some short snippits of the Locale'-Musik from the Region at various places/points/situations in the Game?.

I only hope they won't start like "look guys we'll be realising 2 new dlc's!" and 2 years later they'll be like "Hey guys the number 15 dlc has been released wich will continuate the campaing that we have been selling since 2020 with little and mediocre content for the small amount of 15$!".That would truly be desapointing to say the least
