Expanding? (Challenge 4)

Blue, facing up the page, is in column and has been charge in front and rear (don't ask!) by red. In the manoeuvre phase blue wants to expand to match red's existing overlaps. What is more blue wants to expand "one file" to have an overlap against both red facing up and red facing down, to end up as below. Legal? If not, what is?

Ignoring the can it split issue.

Then yes it has only expanded by 1 file.
However it is sub-optimal - the 5th base is facing up the page, it didn't turn when the 6th was contacted in the rear. Thus it is not in a position to contribute to the melee, and the only way to change that is by expanding, contracting, or reforming the whole BG, it can't just turn in place.
