Re: Chaos Tourney III
Division 1
vvanttin (Byzantine 600AD) beat Cunningcairn (Italian Hill Tribes) 46-6
Noticing the Roman army arrayed on a hilltop, the Italian rebels sprinted for a nearby large forest. Romans hurried down the hill and intercepted them in the open catching them somewhat out of position.
The shooting ability of Roman lancers proved useful here, as in conjunction with skirmishers and bowmen they provoked the Italians into charging brashly. Some rebel bands were disrupted by countercharging lancers and some were caught in the flank after chasing skirmishers. A decisive flanking cavalry charge broke five units leaving the Italian center in tatters. Having suffered elsewhere as well, the demoralized rebel army scattered over the countryside with Roman horsemen in pursuit.

Aetius39 (Macedonian) beats TheGrayMouser (Anglo-Danish) 48-21
The shield wall came at the macedonians, and although they did well against the medium troops, the pikes broke holes open. Later the cavalry swung around and hit the shield walls from behind, ending it. Opponent played great, just pikes were too much for the shields.

Re: Chaos Tourney III
Going to go ahead and post this one, since it's been several days since the battle ended and it hasn't been reported yet...
Division 2
TheGreyMouser (Turkish 600 AD) beat rs2excelsior (Ptolemaic 166BC) 43-18
Not a whole lot to say about this one... my opponent handled things very well. They did a good job of goading my lancers into attacking with light cav and then flanking and destroying them. Other than those, my main offensive power was in my elephants and pikes, neither of which do well when being shot at or are very good at catching fleeing horse archers. I did my best, but this one was gonna be a struggle at the best of times. Good game!

Re: Chaos Tourney III
Division 2
rs2excelsior (Jewish 110 BC) beat Aetius39 (Moravian 833 AD) 60-57
A brutal battle that was every bit as close as it looks. The Hellenistic Jewish army deployed with pike blocks and thureophoroi alternating in the main line and a small group of thureos in reserve, and a couple of xystophoroi on the flank. The Moravian shieldwall hung back, behind a marsh and a large, rough hill and with a wood on their right flank. I initially expected my opponent to contest the hill, but without any medium foot they instead formed up behind it, choosing to defend in the open ground behind it. My forces advanced, the pikes and thureos shuffling a bit to keep the pikes out of the marsh, and contact was made. Early on the Jewish army was behind, losing some skirmishers in the initial exchanges, but the thureos got good rolls against the Moravian shieldwalls and the pikes started getting to work, and the scores swapped. A pike block got a pushback which exposed its flank, and Moravian cavalry started filtering around and exploiting flanks - both sides got some flank charges as the battle lines became disjointed. The Moravians pulled back to a lead once more as more pikes broke - only one of my four was still on the field by the end of it - but exploiting Jewish units also started cleaning up battered Moravian units as well. The turn before the end the scores were tied at 57-57, and it was a Moravian unit which gave in first. An incredibly close match that swapped back and forth multiple times, whose outcome was in the balance right up until the end.
Good game to my opponent, and thanks for all the matches and to Karvon for organizing this tournament! This was fun, I'll probably be back in future iterations!

Div 1
Karvon (Alan 25AD) defeated Cunningcairn (Hunnic-Western 435AD) 62-35 for a 4-0 win.
The two armies met in a hilly and wooded coastal valley. The sea walled off our right flank and a chain of steep hills and forests sealed off much of our left. Our force was based around our mass of lancers with about an equal number of heavy horse archers and a couple of light horse archers for the flanks. A token force of light foot archers completed our army. The Huns had a small lancer contingent supporting a mix of light and heavy horse archers. Both armies deployed in opposing double ranked battle lines in the narrow open area between the sea and the restricting terrain.
Our plan was very simple. Sweep forward with our lancers with our horse archers in support and drive the Hun horse archers off the field. We had a handful of light foot archers we would use to sweep and secure the difficult slopes and woods on our left, knowing the Huns had no such troops available.
Our plan essentially unfolded about as we expected. We charged early which sent most of the Hun front line scurrying and we caught a few evaders and the fighting began. The superior morale of the Huns, however, kept many of them fighting despite losing cohesion and, as typical in swirling cavalry battles, exposed flanks gave them opportunities to take out some of our horse as well. As time went on though, our superior numbers and heavier horse slowly ground down or encircled and killed enough of the Huns to break their army.
The final scene

Re: Chaos Tourney III
DIV 2 Games completed ( Im posting my wins and draws with the assumptions that my opponents are reporting my ignomouis losses)
TGM Scotts-Irish win vs Tomogoezen Huns 7 % to 42%
the wall of cheap Irishman and the horde of cheap chariots made for an impossible task for the Huns
TGM Turks win vs Rx2clesior Ptolemy 18% to 43%
The battle happened at a the narrow mountain pass of Thermopyle, we consigned ourselves to doom, assuming the enemy tpacs and wall of pikes would just advance and drive us off the map, but lo!, our propoganda machine worked and the pikes held back until we defeated the Greeks lances and got behind the lines, squeezing a victory just as our arrows went dry!
TGM Hepthalties win vs Bomburs Bythinans
A gentlemanly battle of steppes folks and yeomen farmers, the arows took their toll and for once my Indian troops did something usefull!
TGM Saramations Draws vs Shapurs and his... ( i have no idea, they were all in the woods!!) 53% to 56%
30 turns pushing into the Hurtgen and yet it somehow felt like 300...
Cheers All!

Re: Chaos Tourney III
It’s funny how perceptions of a matchup differ. I feel like, had I advanced immediately, it would’ve been the same result, just faster. My elephants and pikes were both very sensitive to arrows and not really able to catch evading horse archers (maybe the elephants, if they got lucky... but when they tried to pursue they got drawn out and shot apart). I did over-commit my cavalry early, though, that was on me.TheGrayMouser wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 4:49 pm

My biggest fear was you would just steam roll forward and force my horse archers into endless evades. You had enough light foot to screen your phalanx, I’m pretty sure it would have worked!rs2excelsior wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 4:01 amIt’s funny how perceptions of a matchup differ. Macedonczyk(Indian 546) beat Karvon (Frankhish 751) 44:12
It was a very hard game for me. Luckily, there were big hill where I placed most of the arches. Another lucky Frankish had the hill too and they didn't really want to leave it and they have forest. My massed archers went a bit to the French hill and have routed enemy skirmishes. In the meantime my fighters captured the forest and found some surprise there.
Then the shieldwalls start to attack, my massed archers in a slight panic returned to the hill. The Shieldwalls with small bruises approached the hill where surprise awaited them. I set up the archery in such a way that I delayed the attack and exposed the flank to attacks by elephants and returning fighters from the forest.
