Weird pursuit?

Post by Mairtin »

Image

It's the first time I've ever seen this happen.
The cavalry was in contact after the first pursuit, but after that it stopped one away.
I thought that would be the end of the pursuit, but it kept going causing no casualties, I guess because it wasn't in contact.
This is the 5th or 6th pursuit towards the side of the map, and I'm hoping it will stop pursuing when the lights leave the map.
It's probably too late for this cavalry now, being many turns away from any enemy units.

Mounted units can continue to pursue (and cause casualties) if they are up to 2 squares away, as in your example. (Representing hacking down stragglers). Foot will only continue to pursue, and cause casualties, if 1 square away - i.e. in adjacent square.

So if there is anything odd about this, it is only that they did not cause casualties.

Thanks for the reply and clarification.
I guess it just didn't want to stop pursuing because it ending up leaving the map. It was also the longest pursuit I had seen to date, so thought it may have been bugged.

There is a random chance of stopping pursuing each turn, but no counter to make the random chance of stopping pursuit higher after more rounds of pursuit. So occasionally a cavalry unit will pursue a very long way - as there are plenty of historical records of cavalry units doing.

This might seem illogical, but on the other hand, after a long pursuit in real life the troops might not be recoverable at all before the battle is over.

It say this in the Manual; "Routers are also dispersed if they have not rallied after 5 consecutive rout moves."

I have always believed that meant pursuits could only last a maximum of 5 turns. Is this true?

I have had a few examples recently where pursuits seemed to go on for far longer than 5 turns, but maybe I was just imagining it! I will try and document the next time it happens and raise it as a bug if pursuits are supposed to have a maximum length of 5 turns.

Well yes, because the routers will be dispersed after that so there is nobody to pursue.

I expect so.

I'll take that as a challenge then! From now on I will be recording the start and end turn of every pursuit!

Oh, I have enjoyed it!

I have proof of a pursuit lasting from turn 14 (or even earlier) to turn 21. The pursuit ended on turn 22.

Actually, that isn't a bug, just poor previous information by me.

Routers only disperse after 5 turns if they are not being pursued. The chance of cavalry pursuing each turn after the initial puruit is 50%. Therefore the chance of a cavalry unit still pursuing after 5 non-initial routs is only 3%. After 7 less than 1%.

So this won't happen very often, and it is WAD. (Working As Designed)

It gives a small chance of epic pursuits as described on various historical occasions.

If anything it is lenient. At Edgehill the entire Royalist right wing pursued off the battlefield for 3 miles before some of them were brought back under control.

From p 119 of the manual:

Battlefield ground scales are based on maximum effective massed-firing bow
ranges when the standard representational scale is used. Thus 4 squares
represent approximately 240 paces.

And hence 1 square represents 60 paces (1 pace = 76.2 centimetres) => 46 metres. If I understood it all correctly, that is.

Thanks! It was RBS's comment about the 3 mile (4.6 km) pursuit that got me thinking about it. That is is a lot longer than the entire length of a 48 square battlefield which is around 2.2 km based on your calculations. I have no idea what the speed of the pursuit was but I would guess it would have taken longer than 10 minutes. That is a long time to be chased and would certainly have put me off joining the cavalry :-)
