Why can't this cav flank?

Field of Glory II is a turn-based tactical game set during the Rise of Rome from 280 BC to 25 BC.

Why can't this cav flank?

Post by DanZanzibar »

Came across this weird situation where the cav I had set up to flank the turn before wants to take a longer route to attack the target that leads to a frontal attack. Naturally I was hoping he would move one square and flank the infantry.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why this is functioning this way. I guess there's some nuance to the mechanics that I'm not understanding but it is anything but obvious.

Any help?

Sorry - I attached it but it's not showing up. I keep trying but it disappears when I submit. I've done this before (like once) but can't seem to get it to work.

Even when I try to provide a link to the Google drive image it doesn't work. Here's a link to the image though.

The dots indicate that the cav will go the position two squares from the initial position? Weird to me.

No I'm afraid not but I can say I also tried moving the cav to the adjacent square and then attacking but I couldn't due to too many turns.

It was (and still is) a MP match.

If you move to adjacent square, you inevitably have to change the facing of the cav by 45 degrees. Then the charge demands another 45 degrees of change of facing, which is not allowed. So you can't charge the unit by moving to the adjacent square. Only if your initial facing is towards the right, I think it can be a valid flank charge. However, I still don't understand why the charge is allowed two squares away.

That is very strange and I can't explain why it wants to take that route.

You might be able to force it to take the route you want by moving the raw shieldwall forward.

Yeah I get this. I just wanted to try to make it work.

I appreciate you taking a look. I haven't seen something like this before but I figured the more experienced out there must have.

Oh I should have tried that! I needed that flank attack especially after a rather unlucky double drop the turn before from the other troop fighting there.

I had a similar experience in another game where my cav was one square away facing the enemy flank corner. I didnt take notice of the direction of charge as it was too obvious where it should go. I pressed charge and it bypassed the flank and attacked the unit frontally.
