What is for you the least useful overlay on map

Post by Pocus »

Overlay or filter (although overlay is a more appropriate term I feel). Like perhaps the population level?

If there is a consensus, perhaps the least useful overlay can be replaced by another, you can also provide an input on which one you feel is missing. Barring consensus, a overlay showcasing the new feature of impediments and perks will probably be implemented.

I personally never use the diplomatic overlay since you can press the diplomacy button for the same effect I think.

I would love overlays for specific building types needed in certain events, like religious buildings for example. I know you can see how many markets you have on the faction summary, and that you can see how many cultural/military/industrial/commercial buildings you have per province in the ledger. But it's a bit painful to have to check manually how many religious or governmental buildings you have when certain events trigger :D

I mostly use Ownership, then Goods (in construction decisions, so every turn), and sometimes Terrain Cost (to try to "calculate" if enemy army can reach a province, in wars). I don't remember to ever actually use the others.

I agree with Alcoolamus that Diplomatic overlay can be replaced without loosing access to it.

As for what is missing, I've requested more times that a (All) Buildings overlay is what I desire (maybe most) in this game.

Ownership is my default setting. Loyalty is the overlay I switch to most often, followed by Supply.

Combat Strength might be the least useful overlay to me, because (a) it only covers regions into which you have line-of-sight, and (b) combat strength is a poor measure of the effectiveness of any given army in any particular terrain. If I'm interested in this topic, I'll examine each individual enemy army, not use the overlay.

I agree with the comments above, though, that Relationships would be the easiest overlay button to remove from the array, as it's triggered by the Diplomacy button anyway.

Movement cost overlay. It is just so visually unappealing. I usually just end up bring up the region menu to check what the terrain is. It would be nice if there was a stylized terrain map when all of the overlays are turned off that the player could tell what type of terrain it is at a glance, but without all of the numbers and asterisks everywhere.

I think relationships as it's triggered by diplomacy.

I would like to see an overlay showing what regions can have a new building started. Although looking at regions with icons usually does the trick occasionally I check every region manually and it's suprising how many I have somehow missed. As the empire gets larger the manual method becomes a bit tedious...

(In addition to my post above:)
Missing goods should be added (in red) to the Goods overlay (or make another overlay for them), as I usually get tired to check each province (because it takes way too much to open that panel).

And now that I mentioned it: MOUSE CURSOR IS TOO SLOW to check 150+ provinces and build and move pop around! Please fix mouse speed/delay as it takes me 1 hour instead of 20 minutes to make my turn just because of the slow mouse cursor! (I've seen games in the past fixing this by adding a hardware/software cursor toggle in the settings) (no i do not have a slow pc; GTX 980, though I do play with everything maxed in 4K as it makes the ugly low-res textures a bit more bearable on my 75" tv seen from 1.9m)

I have never used the Combat Strength overlay. It is a very tactical issue to bother showing on a strategic map.

For me it's the Combat Strength overlay. It simply does not provide any informational value. I can only see armies of my foes and my allies, and also what my allies see. Nothing I can't already see by looking at the map with default overlay turned on.

By the way. Why do I see loyalty in each and every region on the map when using the Loyalty overlay, even when I don't have any diplomatic relations with the factions that owns them, but I can only see combat strength of armies of my foes and my allies? It makes the Loyalty overlay giving away too much information, in my opinion.

The same issue concerns Decadence from structures - I'm getting too much information, because I can see decadence levels even in provinces that belong to factions I have no relations with.

Back to original question, if I could choose which overlay to get rid of or replace with another overlay, then that would be the Combat Strength overlay.

Combat strength is the one to be replaced IMHO.

I want to back the suggestion for overlays that help tell which regions have religious buildings and another for government buildings.

Also combat strength.

I do use loyalty, movement cost, relationship and decadence.

Combat strength has been recycled into "see regions/provinces with building slots twiddling their thumbs"

One overlay I would love to see is the national boundaries overlay, BUT with the region names added just like in the provinces overlay. That would make AARs and stream commentary SO much better!

Never use combat strength. Don't really see the point of it when you can get all the info you need via other on-map means.

Diplomacy map overlay I never use, and yet always use that function just via a different route: Diplo button at the top.

To free up another overlay slot you could merge the Political and Relationships overlays. Use the Political colors with the Relationship numbers. Call it "Political Relationships".
