Here's a quick report of the battle vs the Vikings

The opening moves , the Scots won initiaive and were attacking most of the terrain ended up on Keith McAlpins side of the field.

Switching around to view from the other flank , looking at the field from the Scots left flank.

Keith McAlpins cunning plan was to attack on the left and hold on the right and centre.
So you can see most of the left flank here. Blue arrows are the Scots of course!

It seems to be working so far , the Scots have the numbers on the left flank.
But do they have the quality here ?
Image

It's ON!
A mighty clash of shields and spears , an exchange of disruption , but the Vikings have the edge.

But what are those Cavalry doing , Dam Nobles ! who let them out. They are in a bad spot , the Spearmen are about to break.

I should have sent them up the flank as I inteneded but .... oh well.
Image

The Cav are disrupted , the Spear have broken , but the Scots are slaying Generals left right and centre , even the Viking IC goes down to the brave Scots!

A few more tunrns , 3 Vikings Generals dead and a few good rounds of good dice for the Scots and it's all over.

The Thegns get stuck in finally !

So a good close battle The Vikings broke on 10 we had lost about 8, I think it was going well for the Vikings early on , but losing 3 Generals doesn't not help the cause , I was impressed with the Scots and will develop the army a bit more, I had two units of light Horse and the little BG of 4 armoured Cav , that I used poorly , so I will give them another go.
I held the Thegns back a bit too long , perhaps I should have thrown them in earlier , but they finished off well.
The BG's of 8 Spear worked OK , I ran them 3 wide in most cases , expanding when I had the numbers.

It is very sad news , two brave Noble Thegns have been lost in another Viking invasion , the pillaging continues as we speak.
So it's a win each vs the Vikings now.

Perhaps you would have fared better had your cheating opponent remembered to factor in the Thegn's armour.

The alternative of course is for Kieth McAlpin to remember to BRING the armour :)

It was a good game.

what happened?

I would have thought that the Scots would either have the edge with inf or cav or both because the vikings basically have to choose between foot huscarls or getting any cav at all

Hi!
I'm trying Early Scots with IC, two BGs of 10 spearmen and one BG of 8 spearmen.
Thegn armored impact foot and Viking Ally to strenghten the core of HF.
It became a good challenge also for the heavy elite Roman principate army.

It's a balanced tough army quite similar to the Lydian army list that I really like in ancient period

Here is my list I used in both games.
I was a little bit unlucky in the 2nd game , and was very lucky in the 1st game , so it's been close with 1 win each.
I think the armies are good match.

Something like this:

C-in-C Inspirational General
TC x 2 Sub-Generals
FC x Irish Ally General

1 x 8 LF Archers
1 x 8 LF Irish Javelinmen
3 x 6 HF HW Huscarls with rear supporting archers
3 x 8 HF OS Freemen without rear supporting archers
2 x 6 MF HW Irish Warriors
1 x 4 MF HW Irish Nobles.

If that comes to 800 points that's what it was, but I can't exactly remember right now.

The Irish MF really adds a whole new dimension to the Viking army. that might explain the difference

The Scots have pushed the Vikings off the Isle of Mona.
A great day for "Scortland"
