Petition for Orde [succeeded]

Post by GabeKnight »

I'd like to start the petition "A Little Love for Orde" to change the commander picture of Gen. Orde Charles Wingate.

I think it doesn't do him justice and makes him look like an old man of maybe 60, although he died being only 41 years young.

Who's with me? :D

Orde and the Chindits were awesome. However, I like his portrait. Yes, the beard makes him look older, but he would look like that during Operation Longcloth.

But not today, I'm celebrating the "not-have-to-reinstall-windows" party...

Not just could, but most definitely did. He looks kinda like a hobo in that one...(and I don't mean the B/W photo)

I prefer Orde with field-beard, like here:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/0 ... dits-born/
Beards protect somewhat from mosquitos and properly shaving requires water that was rather needed for drinking during the very long trips through jungle terrain on foot.

Something like this, Gabe?

(still work in progress, many fine-tuning required, details like changing the pin in the hat, etc... but let me know if this is the correct direction :))

I think the picture looks remarkably good and does reflect how he might look at the time. Just be thankful he's wearing clothes (had the awkward habit at times of greeting people at home in the buff -- a military genius but quite definitely in the eccentric English mold).

Not something like this, EXACTLY like this... DEFINITELY the correct direction...Thanks, thanks, thanks, LNDavoust ! 8) :D :D

The only decision may be if he should wear an officer's hat or that jungle cap. I leave that to you. I don't mind either. It really looks great. Thanks for doing this!

If only you've been back a few days sooner.... now I'll have to update my mod again...

Happy you like it Gabe :o

If it is not a deal breaker for you, I will keep the officer's hat. I think it is the easier option for me: the cap would force me to reproduce the shadows under it and that could be changelling.

Also, i have found a clearer version of the emblem in the hat, and i think i should be able to add it to the portrait :)

Image

(it seems it is a artillery officer emblem... i had no idea Orde was an artillery officer :) )

I still have a lot to catch up in the forum, it's great you have a new version of your mod, i will have to update it in my computer :)

The portraits of commanders do not have a transparent background so that we do not see the stars for the experience if these stars are empty :

If we remove the background, we see the empty stars appear:

Yeah, playing Red Steel right now and wasn't sure if they changed the stars effect in the new OoB effect... did they tweak it somehow or it was like that in older versions?

Regarding Orde, I'm trying to create similar versions of the portraits as I did in my mod (where they worked ok), so i don't forsee any problem with this, unless i missing something :/

Anyway, shouldn't be difficult to adapt the portrait to new formats if necessary. Thanks, terminator :)

OK, it seems they work as usual (i'm talking about the new portraits, not the star effect, i had not checked that part)

Image

The screencap comes from a custom scen played through the editor in the vanilla version (8.4.1.) where i replaced the portraits of Orde (files "commander_89.png" and "commander_89_unit.png").

I send you the files through PM, Gabe. If you think i could improve the portrait somehow, let me know and i will try to do it :)

Nothing has changed since, it has always been like this with the stars but it is just a remark, a detail of no great importance.

Yeah, as long you're just replacing pics for existing commanders nothing has changed. Nice pic, btw. :)

The only case people need to watch is when they heavily modded the own commander data file, so that they don't interfere with stock entries. But I guess those ppl already use extra copies of the stock files.

I've always liked the look of the game. And with my mod I strive for staying as close to those looks as possible. Thanks LNDavoust for this great commander pic of Orde Wingate! I'll gladly take it and use it from now on. :D

Replacing the commander files in the mod works flawlessly, too: no need to change stock files - thanks for that!

I think LNDavoust's new commander pic's well-integrated:

Looks very nice. So we may have Wingate going into the jungle clean-shaven and return fully-bearded after the first chindit-operation.

Thanks everyone! I guess it didn't turn out completely terrible at the end :) And it feels great to be the one who offers (if tiny) help for once and not the one who ask for it :)

Thanks to Gabe for all his incredible work here in the forum!

Are you going to incorporate the new commander pic of Orde Wingate into the next "Gabe-Mod" update ?
