Japanese lists in Empire of the Dragon

Post by Stewe »

I’m totally in to the Japanese lists (Samurai) , and I’m waiting impatiently for the release of the Empire of the Dragon army book.
I’ve started to paint some Ashigaru for that list and Id like to know what troop choices to concentrate on.
What would be of interesting to know is the troop type, not just for Ashigaru bur for Samurai and cavalry and so on.
Can we get a glance of what to come In the new list.
Myself, I’m more interested in the later lists after the Mongol invasions during the Shogun era.

Diligent searches of the various forums will turn up threads with at least speculations, to which there's no point adding my own.

Some cavalry and foot on the same base is an option for mounted and followers IIRC.

The bulk of BGs in a Samurai Japanese army (from 1040 AD) will consist of mixed mounted bushi (samurai) and their followers, graded as MF Average, Undrilled, Armoured or Protected, Bow*, Heavy Weapon. We recommend that they be based on Mob depth bases, with 1 mounted samurai and 2-3 foot followers with mixed weapons (some naginata, some bow) on each base. Those who have existing armies and don't want to rebase can simply use a mounted Samurai front rank base and a MF rear base but count them all as MF as above.

There are of course also separate bodies of mounted samurai as Cavalry Superior, and followers as MF Poor. The latter can be upgraded to yari wielding ashigaru Average Offensive Spearmen after 1335.

That's going to be one tough combination. Armoured Heavy weapon is tough enough. These guys will probably go through pikemen like they aren't there.

Thanks that helps a lot.

Will there alls be elements of LH or LF (Ashigaru Bows)

What should I concentrate on painting, Samurai CV and followers yes, how about monks and or peasent mobs (time consuming to paint).

You mean when the pike are up a POA in impact? And the Japanese are getting an extra -1 CT when they loose?

I think this army is probably niftier in its speed and width and if the BGs can be 4s it can rival the dominate swarm of 18 BGs.

Also it will enjoy the terrain which gives it more advantage in clogged battlefields.

Great another big BG army to face who also love the terrain as well as heavy weapon :)

A cinematically appropriate choice to swarm the battlefield with bewilderingly complex evolutions.

Seems unlikely they will allow 4s and i would expect the early period to be undrilled...

Still it is an interesting troop type and different from what we have seen before. Very dangerous to a lot of foot, but pretty vulnerable to heavier mounted. A lot will depend on what else is in the army. I am getting the sense that there isn't going to be much (any?) heavy infantry in the east.

Just two questions:

1/ During the period between 1550 and 1600, the Ashigaru Yari are Medium foot Off spear or Heavy foot off spear or we have the choice?

2/ As the list of mid republican roman with a number of hastati for a number of triarii, the samurai list will have this type of limit?

Thanks

1. The FOG period ends in 1500.
2. 1 BG of followers/ashigaru per BG of separately deployed samurai cavalry.

Not something I know - all I can suggest is keep en eye on the forums as that'll be where announcements will be made. Even then I expect comments on lists will be some way down the line - patience time I'm afraid :?
