OK with 16 players in, I'm closing entry as that gives us two divisions of 8 players. I've divided the divisions based on current DL ratings with those having no ratings added to the second division. A special welcome to our three new players who've not joined an online tourney here before. Here's how that looks:

We will official start the timer from this Sunday, Apr 19 and the final deadline to finish will be June 14. Eight weeks should be more than enough time to finish seven games and allow for folks being away a bit for the holidays or what not. You are of course welcome to start your matches immediately is you wish.

Remember to post all challenges here as well as via PM to the player(s) involved.

You may freely choose whether to be player A or B, as far as order of deployment and play, but you need to stick to your assigned armies in setting up matches.

Yuck. Why is the dL ranking being used for the seed? I kinda stopped playing in the dL several years ago as I never liked the concept of a personal score following one around, good or bad. Too big Brother like. Why even rankings at all,its not very chaotic ? Oh well, I suppose we can get started?

Division wasn't an issue in the first two season as we had only a small number of players. This season we've had a very positive response so needed to divide the field. I originally chose to use DL rankings as it was the only rating available which gives some idea of how well a player has played. After this season, I will use Chaos Tourney ratings to divide fields as we'll have three seasons of data to build on.

The idea behind seeding is to provide opponents of similar skill to help avoid one-sided games which are not particularly enjoyable for either party probably. Seeding is certainly not an absolutely perfect value; I've beaten players well above me in the rankings and lost to some well below me, but it does help minimize unbalanced match ups, which is why it is so widely used.

There are alternatives we could consider in the future.

1. No division. All players will play each other player once. This would make for a long season, 15 games in this case. I personally would be fine with it, but not sure how others would feel about it.

2. No seeding. Randomly assign players to divisions. This would keep season length to more acceptable length, but could result in a large number of potentially one-sided matches. Chaotic, yes, fun, probably not so much.

3. Mixed seeding. Mixing the stronger and weaker players into each division, so odd numbers in one and even in the other. This would give weaker players a chance to play strong ones, and learn, hopefully. If we went with this option, I would add a play-off at the end of the season between the two division winners.

Feedback from others welcome as I am not wedded to any one particular option.

I get it, I just thought it odd you used my chaos “rank” alone out of everyone, which has a completely different basis than dL rank... and I actually HAVE a dL rank from seasons 1&2 too .

Indeed, that is part of the challenge. Some players haven't always appreciated that aspect in the past and haven't returned for another season, but we've not had anyone simply dropout so far or forfeit a match rather than make a go of it. I did have one game where we agreed to a draw after a few turns as my light/medium foot army wasn't willing to march out into the open and get steamrolled by pikes, and my opponent didn't feel he had the tools to tackle my defensive position in rough/difficult terrain.

Yes, you will need to let your opponents set up your matches for you. I'm sure it won't be a problem as someone has to set up each match in any case.

I just looked at the newest DL rankings, which is includes just the last 3 seasons. Sorry, I didn't think to look further back. Next season we'll be using CT ratings, so shouldn't be a problem again.
