Crashing virtually every other turn
I'm enjoying the game, but boy is it crashing constantly, so much I can barely go on anymore.
FieldOfGloryEmpires: Empires_STEAM.exe - Fatal application Exit
Unhandled Exception! etc. I must have sent about 20 error logs to you guys already.
Is there something obvious going on here that could be a quick fix? Reinstallling the game or something? It really is nearly every other turn.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Looks like you should be able to run the game fairly easily on your setup. If the crashing is fairly repeatable, can I ask whether reducing the shadow quality and/or AA makes it more stable?

Hi Pip,
Tried that - turned shadows down to low and turned anti aliasing off. Still get 2 crashes in the last 5 minutes... arg!

What about if you disable shadows entirely? Sorry you are having issues. Our error reporting is down for maintenance currently, but I will get all the reports once it is back up and will dig into your issue further.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
So I have shadows off, no anti aliasing, medium graphics, still crashing. On a whim, I disbaled the sound completely. Now I'm getting a lot less crashes. A LOT less. Still crashes from time to time, but much better. Guess it's a sound problem, so maybe focus on that.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Glad you have managed to find a workaround for now. Perhaps try upgrading the Realtec drivers, as they are nearly 3 years old, it could improve the stability and also allow you to have sound.

Every driver is up to date, did that first thing
. It's still crashing though, just not as often. Wait a minute - are you saying my realtek drivers are 3 years old having checked my dxdiag? Only when I do a windows update check, it's saying the realtek drivers are the most up to date... but it is microsoft, so it coudl be wrong!

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Having gone to the realtek site, it seems the 2017 driver is the most up to date, cant find anything more recent than that anywhere else either. Seems odd, but there you go.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
I'm beginning to suspect that the sound thing was just a lucky run of several turns without a crash. However, one thing is for sure - it never crashes in battles or during the end of turn resolution phase.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
I am tracking your logs, and it is crashing in a wide variety of different places and different ways. This kind of behaviour would generally make me think that there is an issue with your system RAM. Try running the checker to see if there are any problems:

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Thanks, Pip. i ran the test but it came back with no problems. I have had a few random BSODs recently, so perhaps it is my computer. Not srue what I could do. The microsoft support is pretty useless on BSOD really, (they've never mentioned a memory test for instance!). I've had completely different stop codes. All they say is to uninstall drivers one by one until you stop getting crashes, but given the crashes are entirely random and occur days apart that's not really practical. In any case, all my drivers are up to date.
I'm wondering whether I should re-install windows.

On the other hand, none of my other games have had this problem, so I dunno.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Unfortunately these kinds of random issues tend to show up more often when running games as they stress the system more. It could be anything from a RAM issue to a motherboard problem. It could also be (as you say) a driver issue, perhaps interacting with some other issue.
I will keep checking on your logs to see if there is anything else that can be seen.
Cheers

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Newer logs might be better. I've run various diagnostics including a command line repair tool that thinks it found and repaired something, also a driver uniinstall and re-install utility that cleaned up the registry a bit. That may have fixed my BSOD but Fields still crashes regulary with the unhandled exception problem. I've reinstalled the game and validated it with steam a few days ago - just tried again, and it said 2 files weren't working and needed to be re-acquired! Hopefully that has fixed it... we'll see. And it hasn't... still getting crashes in the game.

Re: Crashing virtually every other turn
Well... I have updated my bios. I have run a memory check on the ram. I have updated the motherboard drivers, cleaned out the registry, updated WIFI and sound drivers, reinstalled latest graphics drivers. Still crashing - couldn't even complete a single turn last time. None of the other games I have crash like this. I don't know what else I can do. It must be the game. I'm going to give up, great game though it is. Wish it wasn't too late to get a refund but hey ho. Please tell me Panzer General 2 isn't using the same technology? I've been saving that one for later.
