Pot Luck Terrain

Post by Cunningcairn »

My understanding is that when playing a battle with the Pot Luck terrain option the following rules are used to determine what terrain is chosen for the battle.

Where the armies have different home map sets, the game will use the highest priority map set in the following list (highest to lowest): Tropical, Northern Europe, Mediterranean, Middle East, Steppe, Desert." The "Pot Luck" element determines whether the terrain is Agricultural, Hilly, Wooded or Mountainous.
Pot Luck Custom Battle terrain: In regions where these types are available, changed percentages to Agricultural 60%, Hilly 20%, Wooded 10%, Mountainous 10%.

I have never experienced woods during a steppe or desert battle which makes perfect sense. I have also experienced more wooded games when playing in Northern Europe than in other home map sets which also makes sense. Are there factors other than these above that determine the percentage chance of getting a particular battle terrain when playing with a particular home map set?

Not really. And the chance of “woody terrain” maps is the same, but the North European maps have more woods in general, even in Agricultural maps.

Personally, I'd like if there was a bit more of a chance for Steppe or Desert maps; it would give cavalry armies a better chance.

Is steppe being near the bottom of the priority list what people are talking about when I hear people say 'horse archer armies gets the invader tag and so never fight on steppe maps', or is that a completely separate mechanic?

It isn't explicit like in DBM, but it is the same thinking behind the order of priority.

So if you get a wooded north European map there will be a greater percentage of the map covered with woods than if you get a desert map with woods?

There are no desert maps with woods. But if you mean Middle Eastern, yes. Likewise for Agricultural maps.
