The "close defence" classes are-
High mountains
Mountains
City
Thick forest
Forest
Hills
Rough
Swamp
Does each terrain give exactly the same defensive benefit to the unit in there?
For example suppose I want to move an infantry unit into close terrain, which of the above will give him the best protection?
Are Close terrain benefits all the same?

Re: Are Close terrain benefits all the same?
Definitely not.
Example, a city confers better defensive bonuses than a village. A swamp actually carries penalties, not bonuses.
The penalty has its own hex trait, while each hex stats are shown in the 'i' button in the bottom left after you select a hex.

Re: Are Close terrain benefits all the same?
Thanks, I've just screenshotted the ' i ' button readouts in clear weather, dry ground state (below).
So correct me if I'm wrong, but the best defensive terrains are Thick forest and City because their "Base entrench" figure is 4.
Next best are High mountains, Mountains and Forest with a b.e. of 3.
Then comes Hills with b.e. 2.
Then Rough at b.e. 1.
The worst defensive terrains are Clear and Swamp with b.e's of 0.

You left out Init cap, which doesn't apply to infantry, and allows infantry to shoot first.PoorOldSpike wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 4:27 am . . . correct me if I'm wrong, but the best defensive terrains are Thick forest and City because their "Base entrench" figure is 4..
Note: This doesn't change the ranking, but it is why infantry works better than AT in close terrain.
There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.

Sorry, I've only been playing in the Random mission generator so far and haven't seen any deserts, towns and villages in there yet.
PS- Can anybody tell me how minor rivers affect combat? I haven't been able to find it in the manual.
Re: Are Close terrain benefits all the same?
It is in the rules file, +4 when attacking a unit on river, and +4 when defending against an attack from a river.PoorOldSpike wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:04 am PS- Can anybody tell me how minor rivers affect combat? I haven't been able to find it in the manual.

Re: Are Close terrain benefits all the same?
Thanks guys, and for the record here are another 7 terrain types to supplement the 9 I've already screenshotted in an earlier post-

There are a total of 16 terrain types in PC2 (let me know if I've missed any), and I did the screenshots mainly for my own use to see at a glance what the Base Entrenchment levels are, to help me decide which terrain gives best protection for a defending unit.
Here's a ranking of the 16 terrains, the number on the left is its base entrench figure-
5- Fortification
4- Town/ Thick forest/ City
3-Village/ High mountains/ Mountains/ Forest
2- Port/ Dunes/ Hills
1- Rough
0- Desert/ Countryside/ Swamp/ Clear
PS- there are of course other factors involved that are relevant to the various terrains properties such as "Initiative cap" which I think determines which unit fires first, is that right?
Perhaps other people can explain it better than me?

Initiative cap... Caps initiative of non-infantry units.
So even if your tank has 10 initiative, in close terrain it will typically attack after infantry.
