It's a Keeper

Post by RandomAttack »

I've been reading the forums and was almost convinced not to buy it, but since I've played PC1 a bajillion times I just sucked it up and bought it today.
Caveats: I only play single-player; have played the tutorials and three campaign start scenarios just to get a feel for it; my rig just barely meets recommended specs.

BLUF: I love it!

I think the tutorials are very good. The new air system takes some getting used to-- but it's growing on me. I'm struggling just a bit with the graphics trying to find the "sweet spot" on my rig, but it looks pretty nice by default-- just some blurriness with certain zoom levels. Having some of the arty support "only" soft OR hard target seems pretty weird-- but I'm sure I can mod it eventually if it offends my tender sensibilities TOO much...

But here's the thing that makes it great IMO: All the lovely OPTIONS! There are very few wargames that have the confidence in their system to allow this degree of player control, to play the way *they* want to play. Want to play a harder level but give yourself more points for commander traits (and a BOATLOAD of them to suit ANY play style)? Have at it! Couple of different levels of FOW? Yes! Play without turn limits? Sure! Iron Man mode? If that floats your boat go for it! All this without using cheat codes (which are still available if you want them). While I'm sure there will eventually be a few things that make me grind my teeth a bit-- SO WHAT! I have NEVER played a game that I didn't want to tweak a bit.

If you liked PC1, but you are kinda on the fence, I would just say take the plunge. It's hard to imagine that you won't find SOME configuration (given all the options) that will scratch that itch. Plus, I'm sure it will only get better with patches and DLC.

Glad to hear it. Definitely the sheer wealth of options is very welcome. It's just shy of full blown modding the game the amount of things you're able to reconfigure to tailor suit the game to fit your idea of enjoyment.

The thing you have to remember about forums... they're mainly for asking questions, reporting issues, and airing grievances. The vast majority of players who enjoy the game... are in the game playing it. They aren't necessarily going to the forums.

Here's another thread that got pinned on Steam, could be some good reading for PZC1 vets coming back for the sequel.

No turn limit + Iron man is a good combo for this game. (no more rush and no more reloading savegame)
