Had an irritating setback. There's a trick where you hit assault as you're leaving a province, and your army will take the settlement they are besieging and then move on. This backfired on me when I ordered my assault as my army moved on to the enemy capital, and the army didn't assault the intended settlement. They instead lifted the siege, moved to the heavily fortified enemy province with the entire enemy army waiting there, and launched a suicide attack which has forced me to run with my tail between my legs all the way back to my capital.

Its the first time that has happened to me as well, which was extra frustrating. It was as if the established ground rules had shifted under my feet.

I'm at war with the Tarentines. I'm actually on pretty good terms with the Etruscans. Crushed the Sennones outright.

The possibility for Combat is checked *after* each movement impulse. If it took exactly one movement point (ie you moved out of the region on the first movement impulse) to move to the neighbouring region, then it would indeed be impossible to assault the region you already left, and instead the assault will happen when you enter the first region with a hostile fort.


EDIT: Ie the trick you described only works when it takes at least two movement impulses to leave the region you are in.
